My cable internet is down....wireless user question

so I connected through another wireless user. Am I able to tell where they are so I can determine if its an area problem or just a problem with my modem? ( Since it is wireless they have to be somewhat close, right?) I called the cable company and they have no record of an outage in the area but there is some work going on with some power/water lines right down the road. BTW on my modem the send, receive and power lights are all solid, the online light keeps blinking and once in a while the activity light blinks. I think its an area problem but want to make sure I don't need to return my modem.

Talked to the cable company again. There is an outage in our area. Which leads me to the question....how far can my wirless reach that I'm able to connect through someone else????? A friend of mine across the street can barely use my wireless connection and that's not even far away.

the other party may be wireless through DSL, you may have other open connections in your area...
