My bird died :(

My cockatiel died last night. It came on suddenly... she was huddled in the bottom of her cage, non responsive. We called a vet and he said bluntly that if she was in that state, there was probably nothing he could do, and it would be best to cover her cage with a blanket and keep her peaceful and warm.

She was a sweet bird.

Sorry about the loss of your bird.
When I was a child my bird died during the night. When I woke up the cage door was open and I was told "he flew away"
I believed that for years.

I am so sorry. How old was she? My father bought a cockatiel before he died in 1975. My mother named her/him Baby. She was a very sweet bird. A couple years before my mother died, Baby,who seemed healthy other wise, wouldn't perch. This went on for a couple of months, maybe longer. Her vent would bet messy, etc. My mother thought it was just her age. She was about 13 at the time. I took her to the vet and they discovered it was a Vit E and cesium deficiency but the vet said that she was a very old bird and it could just be that she would need geriatric care and nothing would help. Within a week of adding the supplements, she perched again and was back to herself. She out lived my mother who passed away in 1996. She died when I was a WDW with the kids and DH was home. He got up one morning and she was at the bottom of her cage. She was almost 23 years old! He knew I would want to see her and say goodbye so he put her in a zip lock bag in the freezer in the basement.

Sorry about your bird. My friend lost her bird when her dbf stepped on it. We couldn't figure out why they let the bird out of the cage and onto the floor. Anyway, it's sad and I'm sorry for your loss.

I left my Dsis in charge of my parakeets when I went to college. I came home one time and she said one of them didn't look too good and I should go and check him out. The bird was lying face first in about 2 inches of bird seed at the bottom of the cage. I picked up his stiff little body and asked her how long he had been like that. She told me "Since Tuesday". It was Friday.

I am so sorry for your loss. Mine passed away a few years ago very suddenly. We think he had a heart attack after a fright. He was almost 14. I still miss him.

Wow, Dawn, 23 is a really long time for a cockatiel to live. Mine was relatively young, only 6 -- everything seemed fine with her including yesterday morning she was squawking away.

Since she was so young, I'm thinking she had egg binding from what you describe. That's what happened to a parakeet I had. So when I got my cockatiel I made sure to get a male.

My bird (Amazon) died suddenly 2 years ago. He was fine that week, and then one morning he seemed quiet, but not enough that I thought it was odd at the time. He was sitting in his cage all morning then just before lunch time he just fell to the bottom. I held him for 30 minutes as he gasped for air while my husband called an emergency vet and he just stopped breathing while I was holding him. He was 12 which is extremely young for an Amazon. We were really devastated about it. Our avian vet felt that it was probably Aspergillosis (a fungus infection in the lungs).

Birds hide their illness until they are extremely sick as protection from predators. It makes it really hard to help them.

Birds hide their illnesses, so a lot of times it ends up being too late once you notice them acting differently.

My parents have a gray cockatiel, Romeo, that they got as a handfed baby in 1990, and so far he's going strong. We will all be devastated when he dies. They really are a part of the family.

Years ago before I had any children, I was given a little blue parakeet as a birthday gift. He became like my baby. He was so smart and lots of fun. He would talk nonstop, sleep nestled under my chin, follow me around the apartment, toss my dh's change off of the dresser, and loudy sing. Everyone thought I was crazy, but I loved that little bird. He died suddenly one day. He was about 2yrs old. I was expecting our first child, and I guess I was very emotional because I cried for days over him. I missed him dearly for months.
