Pre-trip report. Since I enjoy everyone else's pretrip/trip reports I'd thought I'd give a try in writing my own. Here goes.

Just so you know the members of the crew, we are:

Me - Darcy – (47) loves to travel and get a good deal.

DD#2 - Brittany – (17) our princess. Loves anything and everything girly.

DS #2 David – (15) my sports fanatic. His big request this trip is to eat at NBA City.

Not appearing this trip are:

Dennis (DH) – he gets half the vacation time I do and just can’t make it this trip. He’s happy to stay home by himself - says it like a vacation for him with no one around. He can eat what he wants, when he wants and doesn’t have fight anyone for the tv. He’s also not a lover of theme parks, heat, lines, crowds, etc. so this really isn’t his idea of a vacation.

DS #1 - Justin – (24) – He’s in college (finishing up his last year) and is on a different school schedule than the two youngest.

DD #1 – Taylor – (20) – She’s in college (2nd year) and again, isn’t on the same vacation schedule. She’s on an accelerated program so she goes to school year round and her breaks don’t coincide with everyone else’s.

I’ve resigned myself to the fact that to get all six of us on the same schedule to travel anymore is pretty much impossible.

Well this has got to be one of the fastest trips I’ve ever planned. I’m one of those compulsive people who usually plans trips at least a year in advance, constantly checking prices of airfare, hotels, cars, shuttle services…well I’m sure you get the picture. Originally this trip was supposed to take place in August 2009 and be a cruise. Then DS#2 informed me that he couldn’t possibly go in August because of football practice. DD#2 then wanted to know why we had to go in August, couldn’t we go during April vacation. Then both DS#1 and DD#1 told me they couldn’t travel at all this summer due to classes (they’re both in college). The two youngest now want to go somewhere for Spring Break. Keep in mind this is now the beginning of March in the Northeast, where winter has been long and hard. Everyone is tired of the snow and wants out now! That meant Mom had to get on the computer and see what she could find for last minute travel that was affordable. I didn’t hold out much hope as those of you who have traveled from the Northeast during April school vacation know that you have to book air early or its virtually impossible to find it at an even good price, never mind a great price. At this point a trip back to Universal Studios/Islands of Adventure wasn’t even on the horizon.

After spending several nights researching flights and cruises it became clear that there was no way we were going on a cruise over April vacation. If I could get the flight the cruise was sold out. If I could get the cruise, I couldn’t get airfare less than $750.00 per person (not in this lifetime ). It was looking as if a last minute trip was doomed! Then I got it….. my voucher for a free ticket to Universal Studios and Islands of Adventure from the Superbowl Promotion. Maybe we could put together a trip there.

Off I went again to the trusty computer to start checking out hotels. The last time we went was in August 2007 when we were there for 16 days and rented a house. Since there were nine of us traveling at the time it made the most sense both in terms of price (and room to spread out) to rent a private pool home. I did rent a room at the Royal Pacific for one night to get the Express Pass for two days for the teens in our group (although we didn't stay in the room, it was just the least expensive option). Now that they had experienced the power of the Express Pass of course the kids wanted to stay on-site. I wasn’t quite so sure about the cost (of course the kids don’t think about the money end of it you know). On to the Universal Orlando web-site and what do I find? Buy 3 nights get 2 free! Free do you say? One of my favorite words! So it looks like we can stay at the Hard Rock Hotel for a very affordable price ($180/night including all taxes and fees - RPR didn’t have a standard queen room available for our dates). Ok - that's doable. Now its off to try to find airfare.

We live about 12 miles from the Manchester, New Hampshire airport so that’s my first choice when flying. We’re also within driving distance to Boston (about an hour), Hartford (about 2 hours), Portland (about 2 hours), Burlington (about 2 hours), Worcester (about an hour) and Providence (about an hour and a half). This gives me a lot of flexibility for flights. Of course I tried Manchester first and that was out right away. Least expensive flight that week was $450.00 per person. Next off to check out Boston (not that I thought it would be much better, but it never hurts to look). What, US Airways has a flight for $74/pp going to Orlando (of course its at 5:00 a.m., but its $74.00!!!!!!!!!). Quick book 3 tickets down. Continental has a flight back for $78/pp one way on the date I need. Book those real quick too. Yahoooo we’re golden! Flight’s are booked and now just back to the Universal site real quick to book the hotel. Hey kids, we’re going to Universal Studios for spring break and staying at the Hard Rock Hotel!!!! Yes, I know I’m the best Mom ever.

Since everyone loves pictures (including me) here are some from our last trip. Hopefully this works since I've never done it before.

The last one is DD and DS fooling around with two of my nieces.

Since we leave in a week I decided it was time to get the suitcases out and start getting packed. I had DD (17) and DS (15) try their summer clothes on a couple of weeks ago to see what they might need and if they needed anything else before the trip to let me know and I’d pick it up. Since we live in New England the shorts have been put away since last fall. DD and DS both work on weekends so I thought I’d be a nice Mom and do some of their laundry and start getting everyone packed.

Ok, what is it with guys and underwear? You can drive a truck through some of the holes in DS’s shorts! At what point do they become unwearable in a guy’s mind? According to DS they’re now “comfortable”. To me they’re rags! Needless to say it was back out to the store to buy more.

I pretty much have our itinerary together and it will be a pretty busy trip. Our flight leaves Sunday at 5:00 a.m. :scared1: That means we need to leave our house by 2:00 a.m. :scared1: I’m thinking it will take us at least an hour to get to the parking lot where we’re leaving the car, catch the shuttle and get to the airport. We arrive in Orlando at about 9:30 a.m. so at least we’ll get a full day in

Sunday – Arrival day:cool1:. Get the rental car and head right to the Hard Rock to get checked in. I know they won’t have a room ready that early but we can get our key cards and head out to the parks. Knowing the kids I’m sure we’ll hit IOA first. I expect we’ll have an early night this night. Kids don’t plan on going to bed Saturday night. They’ll just “sleep on the plane”. Oh to be young again.

Monday – Either US or IOA and hanging out by the pool. Blue Man Group that night. We’re in the poncho area so I expect we’ll have a great time!

Tuesday – We’re going to WDW for the day. Most likely we’ll just hit Disney’s Hollywood Studios and Animal Kingdom.

Wednesday – Back to US/IOA for the day and more hanging out by the pool. I think we’re going to try BB Kings House of Blues for dinner and maybe hit some attractions out on I-Drive (Fun Spot or mini-golf).

Thursday – US/IOA and more pool time. We’ll probably hit a movie and City Walk that night.

Friday – Departure Day:sad1:. We’ll have about an hour to get to the parks and hit a couple of our favorites one last time before leaving. I know it will be Hulk for the kids.

Only 7 more days to go!!!!!!

You should have a great time. I went over for a few hours (the joys of living so close) and the crowds were pretty much gone. I saw a few band groups but nothing out of the ordinary. :thumbsup2

looking at your schedule, right now you are in the motherland.....

I know, I know. I was hoping to get some of it done yesterday but I ended up spending about 4 hours at the ER. I was doing laundry and bringing DS' down from upstairs and ended up missing the last five steps! Went from hardwood floor to ceramic tile in a heap on top of my ankle. Not my best moment. Of course everyone with allergies is in the ER convinced that they have the flu. I ended up with some ligament damage (thank god its not broken) and in an air cast for the next week. What a way to end my vacation. Oh well, at least it didn't happen before we left.

Trip Report - Day #1

Alarm goes off at 1:30 am:scared1: Get ready and get the last minute stuff in the suitcases and we're off at about 2:15 am. Arrive in Boston at Logan Airport right on the dot of 3:00 am, just like US Air told in all the paperwork they sent. The kids opted to not go to bed so they slept all the way there in the car. Get into the terminal and up to the US Air counter and guess what? They're not open yet. They don't open until 3:30 am! So why tell me to get there 2 hours early for a 5 am flight if you're not even going to be open. I could have slept for another half hour. Stand in line with the rest of the rule followers that got there at 3 am until the counter opens at 3:30. By this time there's a pretty long line as US Air has lots of early morning flights out of Logan on Sundays. I would say that there were at least 150 people there by 3:30 am. The self check counter opens up with one person working! That's right folks, one person for 250 checking in and no one is there to check in the passengers who are self-checking themselves. Luckily I was at the front of the line and got checked in and got our one bag checked pretty quickly. At this point a 2nd worker finally arrives. It was pretty chaotic there by then. Once my bag was tagged I was told to go to security checkpoint B. Only problem, security checkpoint B doesn't open until 4:30 am and my flight's at 5 am. They finally decided to let us check in through checkpoint A and walk over to our gate. I have to say that I had issues with US Air the last time I flew with them (10 years ago - yes, I hold a grudge). I will say that once we got past check in the flights (we connected in Charlotte) were smooth and on-time (actually a bit early).

We arrived in Orlando and went off to Avis to collect our rental car and were on our way!! We arrived at the Hard Rock at about 10 am. I thought we'd check in and have them store our luggage while we went to the parks as I didn't expect the room to be ready. To our surprise it was! Off to the room to get unpacked and then off the parks! We had some camera issues so while I took pictures of the room I don't know what happened to them. We had a very nice room on the 5th floor with queen size beds, a sitting area with a table and two chairs, another chair in the corner with an ottoman and dresser. There was plenty of room for the three of us. Bathroom was a standard room, tub w/shower, toilet, sink and mirror and there was another sink right outside the bathroom with a mirror making it easy for 2 people to get ready at the same time. There was definitely plenty of room for the 3 of us.

By this time it was around 11 am and we were all getting hungry. DS really wanted to eat at NBA City so we headed over there. Here are some pictures from along the walkway over to US/IOA.

Its a really nice walk from the Hard Rock and not far. I think it took us about 5 minutes. Here's a shot of NBA City as we came up to it:

101_1623.jpg

Sorry foodies but I forgot to take pictures of the food while we were there. I think we were so hungry we just wanted to eat! DS had a burger and fries and DD and I both had the grilled chicken sandwich. Everything was great. Total for lunch with tip (using my AAA card) was $40.00.

After lunch we headed over to the Studios side. Since we wanted to give our lunch time to settle we decided to head over to see what time Horror Make Up Show was at next. We lucked out and there was one in 5 minutes. Got front row seats with our Express Pass (love that thing) and sat down to enjoy the show. Its one of our favorites and we manage to see it at least once a day when we're in the studios.

I'm not going to give anything away, but if you've never seen this show - GO! Its one of the funniest ones we've seen in any theme park and we just love it.

After the show we headed over to the Mummy, another favorite, then it was off to Disaster and Men in Black. At this point we were losing steam and decided to call it day. The kids had only slept on the way down in the car and on the plane. We made a quick grocery run as we like to have breakfast in the room (I brought a small collapsible cooler with me). After we got back we headed down to the pool area for a couple of hours. Kids had swim and then napped in the loungers.

101_1696.jpg

We had dinner at The Kitchen as we didn't have the energy to go anywhere else. The food was excellent. DS had chicken fingers, fries and a salad and DD and I both had a pasta dish with chicken, and vegetables. Total for dinner with tip was $65.

We then headed up to the room to get cleaned up and go to bed as we were all exhausted by this point. I think we were all asleep within minutes.

Next up: Day #2 - Islands of Adventure!

Great pics. What kinda camera you use??They are nice and clear!!

I see you liked The Kitchen also.It was our 1'st time 2weeks ago eating there and it was great!!

The ones in my pre-trippee were taken in 2007 with a Kodak Easyshare CX7630 (5.0 mp, 3x zoom). The ones I took this trip were with Kodak Easyshare ZD710 (7.1 mp, 10x zoom). I really like both cameras and find them easy to use. The only downside is that they really aren't pocket cameras. The CX7630 is small enough to fit in an fanny pack or small purse. The ZD710 is a bit bigger & bulkier so I usually just wear it around my neck or put it in my bag.

Day #2 - Islands of Adventure

Well I was up at my normal time of 6:30 a.m. I know the kids weren't getting up anytime soon so I got ready and headed out to the pool, leaving them a note to either come get me or call when they got up. On the way down I took a couple of pictures:

101_1609.jpg

Eric Clapton's Guitar

Paul Stanley from Kiss' Guitar and costume

101_1616.jpg

Spinal Tap's clothes and guitar. I love this movie!

101_1617.jpg

Joe Perry's guitar and clothing.

Let me tell you the pool area is pretty quite at 8 am. Great place to relax and read a bit. Brittany joined me around 10 am and David finally called around 11. It was now time to go to Islands of Adventure!

101_1627.jpg

101_1630.jpg

First up was Hulk. The kids rode this one by themselves. Mom is a coaster chicken of the first order.

101_1645.jpg

101_1457.jpg

Stand-by wait time when we got there was 35 minutes but with the Express Pass the kids didn't have any wait at all. It was walk on. As soon as they were done we headed over to Spiderman (which is one of my favorites).

101_1674.jpg

As soon as we were done we went right back on again. Stand-by line was 25 minutes and again, it was a walk on for us. As soon as we exited the ride we saw a sign to meet Spiderman.

101_1460.jpg

We were then off to get wet! Popeye was up next. We were in a raft with some teens from either Canada or France who had never been on before. They had on jeans, sneakers and socks. We convinced them to take off the socks and sneakers and put them in the middle with the plastic cover along with their backpacks and cell phones. There was a bit of a language barrier but with some hand gestures/pointing we got our message across. They were going to get wet! We got drenched! I don't think anyone in our raft ended up dry. We were then off to Dudley Do Right.

101_0812.jpg

This is another family favorite. After Dudley Do Right we headed up to Jurassic Park. We figured since we were wet we'd get all the water rides done, but it was shut down. At this point we decided it was time for some lunch. It was Brittany's choice today and she picked the Hard Rock Cafe. We did go back to the room to change clothes first though. Coming back we took the water taxi. Here are some pictures from the ride:

On our way over to the Hard Rock Cafe:

We were seated very quickly and had a wonderful waitress. I had the Haystack Salad which was wonderful. Brittany had the chicken fajitas which she said were very good (they looked good) and David had, what else, a burger and fries (I think he lived on burgers and fries the entire week). Lunch with tip came to $62.

After lunch we decided to see what time the Sinbad show was at. We were in luck and one was starting within the next 15 minutes. I really want Amora's abs!

101_1472.jpg

After the show we went to Posiden's Fury. This is not one of our favorites, but we do it at least once every trip. We then headed over to Dueling Dragons as the kids decided their lunch had settled. I sat outside and had a nice cool drink while waiting for them. They rode twice so they could do both Fire and Ice. We then walked back over and did Spiderman again, and they did Hulk again, twice. At that point we decided we'd had enough and headed over Margaritaville for something cold to drink. The kids got virgin drinks and I got mine with some kick. We hung out on the covered deck and listened to the music and just relaxed. Since we were going to Blue Man Group that night we decided to just stay there and have some appetizers as we really weren't too hungry. We got the buffalo wings, shrimp & mushroom dip and the nachos. OMG the plate of nachos was huge! We could have made a meal just off of those. We left Margaritaville around 7:30 pm as the show started at 8. The appetizers and drinks (2 with alcohol and 4 without) and tip ran $75.

I have to say if you've never seen the Blue Man Group and have a chance to do so, do it! We sat in the center section three rows back from the stage (poncho area). The seats were perfect. I'm not going to give anything away but it was an amazing show. David was picked to participate. If you've seen it in Orlando he was picked to do the part with the strings, drumsticks and ears. It was the best night we had there.

101_1602.jpg

101_1679.jpg

The show ran about an hour and 45 minutes. After the show we headed back to the hotel for bed as the next day was going to be busy. Here are a few shots I took on the way back.
