I'm floored. After about three years of "not doing holidays", my assistant got me a terrific bosses' day gift. But now I'm baffled....do I do something for her for Admin Assistant's Day?

A very nice surprise, but now I'm so confused.:confused3

I'd just ask her. Something like "I was really touched by the present, but I understood in the past that you weren't comfortable with the gift giving process, so I'm not sure whether you'd be comfortable if I got you a gift for any other occasion."

Maybe you are just a terrific boss no matter what!

How very kind of her. I would ask her closer to Admin Assistant Day, though. That way, she'll know you really liked her gift enough to remember it that long.

Relax. JW don't celebrate secular holidays. It's an important piece of info for the story.

It has nothing to do with that. Many Jehovah's witnesses do not celebrate holidays or give gifts if I remember correctly. It's an out of character thing to do if you are in fact a Jehovah's Witness.

I would have asked the same question had I received a gift from someone of that particular faith. There's nothing wrong with this thread at all. I think it's great she's being so considerate.

ETA: I forgot to write my original response! I would too, probably ask her if she felt comfortable accepting a gift or you taking her out to lunch. If she doesn't, great. And if she does, well at least you cared enough to ask and find out.

Take her to lunch on that day. It's not really a gift, but you are showing her that you care and appreciate her.

For the PP who was upset, Jehovah's Witnesses do not celebrate holidays or give gifts so it is relevant to the story.

I think JW's do not celebrate "secular" holidays. If I remember correctly, they don't even celebrate their own birthdays. I believe that's why the OP mentioned it. So, it would seem odd to receive a gift from a JW for something like Boss' Day, which is more or less a Hallmark holiday. Not saying the OP didn't deserve it, just that it's a very small holiday in the grand scheme of things...

Hmmm. A deteriorating economy will make people do strange things.

We don't celebrate religious based holidays but we do give gifts. I have given gifts to my co-workers and boss as well as baked items for the office. We, family & I, give a gift every year to the boys teachers. We just don't participate in the traditional gift giving holidays. Of course not everyone whether a witness or not wishes to buys gifts for co-workers regardless of holiday.

I grew up as a JW and always did the Admin. Asst. Day thing and Bosses Day...stuff like that. They pretty much just don't celebrate holidays with "pagan" origin, which is everything else according to them.
