My 4th running life !! (Comments Welcome)

Hi all,

Last weeks progress on Half Marathon training plan in what was a glorious spring week weather wise.

Tuesday 5 miles easy run 11.54 pace.

Lovely day 56 and Sunny 😎 with a feel’s like of 53.

Morning run as opposed to afternoon as Tilly was going to the groomers for a spring spruce up at 1pm.

Wednesday 2nd April 5 miles easy run 12.23 pace.

Nice weather again and a pleasure to be out running 🏃‍♂️

Friday 4th Speedwork

Went to River where it is flat, did 4 miles at HM Pace of 11.30 and 1.2 miles cool down.

Another lovely spring day 😃

Sunday was a planned 10 miler which due to something coming up last minute that needed attending to I postponed until Monday. ( UPDATE I got it done 👍)

Other news 🗞️

Our scales went crazy switching themselves on and off and swinging up and down between weights wildly. New batteries failed to fix it so new scales it was

Following on from the Garmin discussions I decided not to go for all singing and dancing scales just get a basic set of scales, no body fat percentage etc etc that the old ones had and we never used.

My only concern was if the new scales would weigh heavier or lighter by a significant amount but they were within 1lb of old ones before they became possessed.

Went ahead and ordered the New Balance 680s which have arrived but I don’t get them until Thursday for my Birthday.

In Garmin related news my VO2 remains at 37 however my fitness age is now down to 54 🙌 my actual age and Garmin fitness age are the same. However due to the magic of aging (there are not
that many benefits I have found) on my Birthday in 2 days my Garmin age will be one year ypunger than my actual age 😂😂

Also after yesterday’s belated 10 miles I got this notification 🔔 have never had this before. Still 3 weeks from race day so maybe peaked too soon 🤣🤣.

Not worried though goal is just to complete the training plan and finish.

Weight loss has stalled with nothing in last

4 weeks so hoping I can get something over next 3 weeks prior to race day.

Have a great week all

Happy early birthday! I wonder if a singing and dancing scale would make me feel any better about the inevitable increase in my weight? Nah....which is why I just never weigh myself!

Thanks ! Maybe I should give that a try.

Very exciting non running news yesterday as the plans for the new Universal theme park in the UK have been confirmed 😃

It is expected to be complete in 2031 and with Disneyland Paris opening Frozen land in 2026 and Lion King land in 2029 ?? some cool things to look forward to.

Now I only need for Paris to bring back the half marathon 🤞 😬

Some advice/views required. Have followed a training plan for the last 5 weeks with 2 left to go until race day.

My A goal for this upcoming Half was to follow the plan and I have done it to the letter all workouts and distances completed 👍

Last weeks long run was delayed by a day so I did it Monday and I have done my planned mileage for this week so I’m at 22 for the week and 4 planned today and 12 tomorrow so that’s a total of 48 which very high for me.

After the long run Monday and Speed-work yesterday I had pain in my Left Knee (ITB) not severe but first time I have had it in a while.

Question ? Would you do the 4 miles for this week and turn next weeks 10 miler into the 12 and call it good or continue with both long runs this week.

It’s 2 weeks from race day and unlikely to make much difference performance wise and due to less than expected weight loss over the cycle there is no critical time goal.

Essentially would you swap the goal of following the plan to the letter to the goal of staying injury free ?

I think I just need permission from more experienced runners to make the right call over letting ego win.

You have a lot more running experience than I do but I wanted to chime in as a fellow over-50 runner. If you are having a bit of pain now, I would encourage you to take it a tad easier to try not to aggravate it ahead of the race. You've done a perfect training session so reducing your long run by two miles is not even a blip. It's more important to get into race in top form than it is to have a perfect training session!

Thanks 🙏 yes that is a sensible approach.

Injury free > perfect training. I would skip the long run and even the 4miler if the knee bothers at all. I would then keep the remaining runs as is--not try to "catch up" with miles.
Injury free > Perfect training , yes I like that.

Trying to catch up is what was on my mind but it is t a good move , Thanks 🙏

I agree about skipping or shortening longer/harder runs between now and race day. Hopefully that will get you through the race without issue. Just note that not running won't actually address your ITBS, so after the race, make sure you work on strengthening your hips to fix the problem.

Thanks , yes I will adjust and drop tomorrows 12 and replace next weeks 10 with 12.

I hear you on the strength training , you gave me that advice before and I did start a plan….. I did one week …. 😳

As soon as I felt it return I thought ah should have kept that strength training up as advised by @WillRunForPizza

This time I will be on it no excuses 🫡

Hi all

22 miles for the week

Monday 10 miles @ 12.36 pace

Mild pleasant weather run was on a mildly hilly route but went well no real issues took it nice and easy.

Tuesday - Rest

Wednesday- 3 miles @ 11.56 pace.

Tried my new NB 680 V8s. More cushioning than V6s and very …. Bouncy I liked them.

Thursday - 4 miles @ 12.09 pace

A toasty 65 degrees. Very pleasant to have this extended period of sunshine which I above the norm for here at this time of year.

That was all for the week as discussed in earlier posts. Ran today and felt a little clunky for first couple of miles but once loosened up I felt fine.

I got a good deal on the shoes, I do feel running shoes are much more expensive with ever declining quality….. I had issues with almost every pair in the last few years with stitching and cosmetic bits coming loose and falling off so I do try to always shop for a deal so when the inevitable does happen I don’t feel so bad.

These should have been £110/$138 but they had £20/$25 off, however what was this ? If I was prepared to accept the Papa Smurf blue colour I could get another £25/$32.25 off……. Well yes thank you I will.

So total was £69.99 roughly $81 so quite happy with that, here is a picture of them ……IMG_1955.jpeg

Hope everyone has a great week.
