Im considering a visit to Disney the week of Thanksgiving. How horrible of an idea is this? We have been twice, once last month and once in May. We'd be going with my Sister in law and her family, so we'd have 4 boys, 11, 9 and 2 6 yr olds. Both my sister in law and I have birthdays that same week as well. Looking at past dates, looks like the only party that week has fallen on Sunday, is that usually the case? Is it worth going to? What else goes on that week that is out of the ordinary?

Why is going to Disney ever a horrible idea?? Yes it will be busy, but if you plan and have your expectations set, you should be okay. I went to MK on Thanksgiving day once a few years ago, and it wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. IDK about the party, but I would think crowds go down a lot on that Sunday, so a party might be a good idea.

Have you considered the week after? That's our preferred week every year. Lower crowds, but you would have to pull the kids out of school.

They don't want to pull their 11 year old out of school a full week. If we go the week of Thanksgiving its just 2 days.

I never think it's a bad idea, but I'm the only Disney fanatic in the family lol

Then I don't think Thanksgiving week is a bad idea if that's the only time you can do. They typically extend MK hours all week, so while it'll be crowded you'll have plenty of time. And yes on the Christmas Party - it will likely only be the Sunday before and after Thanksgiving, no weekday parties unless they change it up.

You may want to consider pulling them out the Monday and Tuesday after Thanksgiving. Sunday and Monday after Thanksgiving are likely to have much lower crowds than the Sunday and Monday before.

Candlelight Processional and the Holiday Storytellers at EP will both start on Thanksgiving day. ALL of the Christmas decorations will be up all over WDW, including the life-size gingerbread house at Grand Floridian.

Sure, but I expect they want to get two weekends out of it for a longer sty than just one weekend.

There is a VERY long thread on this board about the Christmas party and whether it is worth it. I like it because we do shorter stays so it isn’t much more than adding an extra day to our ticket and lets us get time at MK with lower wait times on rides. But since you are staying a whole week, I would not do it. The add on cost of the party is huge compared to adding a day to a longer ticket, and the Christmas-specific meet and greets and shows draw huge crowds that are unpleasant to deal with.

If you are wanting to go for 8 or 9 days then you should be okay. Just set your expectations for the crowds and do your best to the reservations and fastpass+ that are important to you.

As you say, the cost for a large group going to the Christmas party will be a lot compared to extra day tickets. The party likely is not worth it if you have done it before and don't care about seeing the shows/parade/fireworks again.

Do you have an Annual Pass? IF not, with three trips in a year it would have likely saved you money.

we haven’t gone 3x in a year. 2x tho. My husband didn’t think we’d be back in less than a year this last trip and didn’t want to upgradeto ap while we were there. We’ve never done any parties or after hours things. I was thinking it might be fun and a way to get in some stuff we might not be able to otherwise. We own dvc so we could get in at 2 right?

Sorry, I misread. I thought you went last month and were going again this May and then in November. I take it you went last May. To me, the parties are busy and rushed. The parades and fireworks are fantastic though. The character meets are great, but the rare characters have incredibly long lines. Ride lines do tend to be shorter though and some walk on. I have only done the After Hours event at HS. We really enjoyed it, the park felt empty. Slinky Dog wait was similar to a fast pass wait (maybe a little longer), the rest were practically walk on.

Another thought, if you are not buying park hoppers the MVMCP ticket will get you into MK at 2 pm (since you are DVC) and you could start your day at another park. The only downside is if you plan to stay for the entire party it could make for a very long day.
