Musty Basements

I've lived in my home for 12 years and we always have a dehumidifier on downstairs. Unfortunately I have to do laundry down there and its used mostly for storage. I can't stand the mustiness of it . . .we have never had water since we lived there.

Any ideas on how to make it smell better?

I haven't had to try this but a friend of mine gets those disposable baking pans, puts in kitty litter and charcoal briquets in it. She says it smells real good and absorbs moisture.

Don't know if it actually works but it is worth a try.

Our basement flooded a few years back. We had the carpeting professionally cleaned and we threw away anything that had gotten wet. We just couldn't seem to get rid of the smell. One day I was in the Yankee Candle store and mentioned this to the woman working there. She said that eucalyptus gets rid of damp musty smells. I thought she was just trying to sell a candle but I was desperate and bought a large eucalyptus jar. Well, she was right!!! I don't know what it was about that particular scent but it really did work. And in the years since, I have burned that scent downstairs whenever it gets a little funky-smelling and it always does the trick.
Try it--it can't hurt!

I have the same problem. No water, but between the cat box and the mustiness.... I have two Glade plug in air freshners. Works very well.
