Last month on a weekend getaway I found out that there is a Whole Foods & Trader Joes one hour from us. We had the time to go into Whole Foods & I was blown away by their selection & the quality of their food! :thumbsup2

I would like to go to the 2 stores once in awhile to stock up on some of their better items that can't be found at your traditional grocery store. So, what items do buy at those stores exclusively?

Thanks a bunch for your feedback! :flower3:

I've never been to Whole Foods (as it's a good 45-60 minute drive from my house) but have two Trader Joe's within 15 minutes. I don't do all of my shopping there but do like a few things:

*There's a wild rice blend with radish seeds (this is so yummy as a side dish, great texture)

*Lime popsicles (I know you can get them anywhere but these are really tart and don't have all of the chemicals in them)

*Banana frozen waffles :lovestruc

All of these items are about $2 each. They have lots of interesting things (keep in my mind that it's not organic unless it says it is [if that's important to you] and some of their products do have HFCS [high fructose corn syrup] if you're avoiding it). I love almost all of their baked goods (especially their bread) and they have an organic chai tea mix (in some stores it's powder and other stores it's liquid) that is so good. It's good that it's not very big as it's not overwhelming and you can really look at everything in not much time at all.

be careful, even TJ's can get pricey, and WF is VERY pricey....:thumbsup2
that said- TJ's has the BEST inexpensive froz. veggies.-some of it is organic, some not,but it is so good! peas, corn, skinny green beans, shelled edamame,asparagus- TJ natural p. butter,TJ's low sugar jelly, Ezekial 4:9 bread, their fair trade coffee is GOOD and cheaper than anyone else- softsoap, dishwasher detergent,SLS free shampoo and conditioner, all these items are light on the environment, chemical free and CHEAP.
I also like the jasmine brown rice and massala sauce in a jar

This is what I get when I go to Trader Joes:
Frozen Orange chicken
frozen rice (comes like 3 or 4 in a pack) that you microwave - really good and easy
chicken shu mi (sp?) (little dumplings - my Dd loves these)
grated parmesan
frozen corn (tastes sooo good and sweet)
pizza minis (around 4 or 5 individual pizzas wrapped together)
nuts (they have a huge selection)
package of frozen chicken breasts

That's all I can think of right now.

I second the frozen asparagus at TJ's. It's the only place I buy it. The problem is...the warehouse is out of it right now!! I also get the mushroom ristotto there as well as the frozen fish. It is flash frozen and stays frozen (not freezer burned) for a long time. It's very reasonably priced as well. I LOVE that place. Their fresh fruits and veggies are also delicious and well priced. Those are my must-have's when I go.

It all depends on what you buy, especially at Whole Foods. If I want to buy fancy cheeses and desserts, then yes, Whole Foods will be pricey. But where I live, they have the cheapest milk of any store, and their produce is very reasonable. Salad greens, in particular, are cheaper than any grocery store in the area. One other thing I like about Whole Foods is that you can buy things in bulk, including spices. So if I only need a teaspoon of some spice for a recipe, I can buy just that, instead of paying $5 or so for a jar that I probably won't use.

I love Trader Joe's, too. I really like their frozen entrees. The chicken enchiladas are a favorite of mine, as is the citrus glazed chicken.

Happy shopping! :)

I do about 90% of my shoping at TJ's. Never been to WF, but one is opening in a town about 30 minutes from me this spring so I'm excited to see what they offer.

What I usually get a TJ's:

-Organic fresh fruits and veggies
-Organic free range chicken
-Organic bread
-All Dairy (even their non organic dairy is hormone/antibotics free)
-Free range organic bown eggs
-Canned organic tomato sauce and diced tomatos
-Fresh pizza sauce (they also sell fresh dough but I make my own at home)
-Olives, ketchup, mustard, honey, salt, organic sugars, and other condiments and baking suplies
-Wild Salmon (frozen)
-Frozen choped basil and garlic. These are great, they are frozen in little cubes, each cube is 1 clove garlic or 1 teaspoon of basil. As good as fresh but a lot less hassle.
-Free trade organic whole bean coffee (breakfast blend and Sumatra are my favs)
-Organic ice tea lemonade
-Wine, they have a great wine selection

One thing I love but never buy because I'll eat the whole dang tub is Pub Cheese. It's spredable cheese for crackers and such. They have a jalepeno pub cheese that is insanely good!

I'm going there today for my usual every 10 day trip. On my list today is:

milk
prunes
peanuts (lightly salted)
"This ___ walked in to a Bar" Breakfast bars (in fig, apple, strawberry and blueberry)
Spinach salad mix
Oregon chai tea concentrate- cheapest prices anywhere!
Reduced fat potato chips
Joe's O's (their version of Spaghetti O's)
Yogurt - we love the bananilla in the big container that we mix with granola
O's - their version of Cheerios - I think they taste better than Cheerios
Granola
Chicken dogs
Instant garlic mashed potatoes
Amy's Miso soup - best prices!
Frozen jasmine rice

That's all I can think of right now. We do 90% of our shopping there and just pick up small things at the regular store. I find Trader Joe's brand to be better tasting and better quality than the store brands here and most national brands as well. I highly recommend their take and bake bread as well. Even my husband, who usually bakes the bread for our family says theirs is delicious.

This thread made me realize that I almost never buy packaged items at Whole Foods...I always buy prepared foods! What can I say, we're lucky enough to have the flagship Whole Foods, so we get kick rear food stations. That being said, I know some of the larger WF's out there carry some of the same prepared foods as ours, so I wanted to recommend you keep an eye out for these few items:

Chantilly Cream Cake -- it is a chantilly cream frosting (cream cheese, mascarpone, etc), with a layer of real berries in the center layer. DRROOOOL. Can be expensive if you get the whole cake, but I know the bakeries often sell slices of these as well. It is the BOMB, and they use natural ingredients, not weird hydrogenated variety stuff ;)

Crab & Butternut Squash Bisque (in one of the soup stations) -- to die for. And I don't even care for crab very much. Less sweet, more savory than regular Butternut Squash bisque. But very rich, a meal in itself ;)

Pizza Dough -- if they have a pizza station, they'll sell you a ball of their very tasty pizza dough. Ours offers it both frozen and unfrozen.

Two Bite Brownies -- this is packaged by Whole Foods, so probably more widely available. Very moist and chocolatey.

Also, if they have a real bakery (not an outsourced one), DH goes nutso for their cannolis. Says they're the best he's ever had. :thumbsup2

I do buy all my spices either here or at a similar store to Whole Foods. Since they're sold in bulk bins, I save a lot of money on spices vs buying them in jars from a grocery shelf. Also in the bulk bin section are cheaper Organic flours and grains, and I like their "self serve" maple syrup.

Trader Joe's Must Haves:

Sumatra coffee - whole bean, in the can, 12oz for $4.99

the double crunchy peanuts - addicting!

green chile and cheese tamales

chicken enchiladas (frozen, single serving)

salsa verde $1.99 a jar and far and away the best!

mini pitas - like $1.59 a bag, kids love them for snack!

hummus - we get the organic and it is just over $2 a container

refrigerated pizza dough - runs like $1.29 and it is good

frozen edamame - great snack for me and the kids

pound plus bar milk chocolate - for DH, he is addicted and says it is the best chocolate we can access :)

I love all of their crackers, their string cheese, their lightly salted almonds, and of course the cheese selection

We also love their citrus shampoo, cleans our hair well and doesn't irritate my face like a lot of other shampoos do.

Oh, and Mission St. IPA for DH and Newton's hard cider for me. TJ's is one of the few places that allows you to buy a single bottle from a 6 pack to give something new a try, love that! :goodvibes

So, what items do buy at those stores exclusively?

The only thing I buy at Whole Foods on a regular basis are the individual packets of Justin's nut butters (almond, maple almond, honey almond, honey peanut & cinnamon peanut)

Trader Joes, I hit much more frequently, mostly for snack-y foods, as I live a distance from the store, and I'm always worried that the perishables won't make it. Some of my favorites are: perfectly protein oatmeal packets, cranberry ginger macadamia trail mix, butternut squash/carrot-ginger/black bean soups in tetra packs, dry toasted sliced almonds, organic fruit spreads (apricot & strawberry), greek yogurt, sesame crackers, their version of pop chips, reduced-guilt pita chips...

We were just at Whole Foods last weekend and I love their selection of organic bulk food. For example, we eat a lot of oatmeal, and you can get organic oats for $1.39/pound. I find that whatever items WF has on sale, those come out to be what regular price of a non-organic item would be at a regular grocery store. Example, they had organic apples for $1.49 a pound last weekend. At Target, I'd pay the same for conventionally grown apples.

Trader Joe's has amazing soft oatmeal raisin cookies! (Near the bread)
We like their frozen veggies, potstickers, and Asian stir fry meals. Bags of nuts and the organic fruit leathers are also a good deal for us.

For some reason, I always end up at Trader Joe's for their snack type foods.

pound plus bar milk chocolate. I made some rocky road with this on Tuesday.

Chocolate filled croissants (had one for breakfast today).

Chocolate covered pretzels. Better than Harry & David at half the price.

Chocolate covered lace cookies for my hubby (sorry, I forgot the name).

That is it on my absolutely must have list at Trader Joe's.

You guys are killing me - I have both of these stores very close to my home, and in the two-plus years I have lived here, I have been to each of them once. Now I realize that I am missing out on a new world of options!

Normally I drive to the commissary (about 8 miles away) or Costco (about 3 miles.) Sometimes I go to Vons/Safeway, about a mile from here. BUT - I could walk to Whole Foods! (It's a smaller one I understand, but still...)

Now, the savings at the commissary make it worth the time and gasoline for regular grocery runs - but sometimes I want more purchase options or to save the drive time. I had NO IDEA there was all of this right in my front yard! (especially that Chantilly cake - oh my!)

Thank you,

Maddle

My favorite bread comes from WF--
Seeduction bread--it is expensive, but really good, hearty, healthy and full of flavor and fiber.

I will drive 40 minutes to our closest Trader Joes just for their Peach Salsa and Surf Board Chips. :lovestruc:lovestruc:lovestruc

We also love their frozen pizzas, banana waffles, orange chicken, any of their frozen veggies (love the peas and corn) and O's - their version of Cheerios, nuts and dried fruit, and I love the Trader Joes oreos...lots of other things, but those are the things I can think of right now.

When I drive to Columbus (closest Trader Joe's) I take a cooler because there is sooo much I love!

I love the:
Frozen Orange Chicken
Frozen Breaded Eggplant Patties
Frozen Garlic Chicken Stir Fry
Frozen Parmesan Puff Hot Dog thingies... (sooo good! wish I could remember the name!)
Peach Salsa
Pineapple Salsa (milder than the peach, in our opinion)
Sea Salt Peanuts
General Tsao Stir Fry sauce
The tubs of chocolate chip cookies..

Too funny that one of those threads linked was my own. ;) Search has gotten a lot better on this board recently.

*eta*

TRUFFLE BROWNIE MIX! I can't believe I forgot it!

How funny that you posted this today. I was planning to come here this afternoon and either do a search or ask the same question about Trader Joe's.

I have seen many threads on here about the store and want to check it out so badly. The closest one to me is in Atlanta and we are just outside of Bham. We are going to Atlanta this weekend to take dd to the AG store for her bday. I had already decided that I must check out Trader Joe's before heading back home.

I now have lots of ideas on what to look for. I can't wait!!!!!!!!!

I am in Whole Foods at least twice a week.

I love their cranberry tuna salad, chicken breasts (who knew they had so much flavor?), veggies, wine, fresh bread, homemade gelato, sushi, salad bar and great snacks.

Trader Joe's - love most of what is in the frozen aisle.
