Music Camp ?

Has anyone sent their child or gone to music camp? Not band camp for your HS band but a camp for the arts.

The instramental program at my DD's school leaves a lot to be desired. She really enjoys playing the flute and I think that she's pretty good. The school couldn't even fit band into her schedule this year, music is a very low priority I hate to say. It's okay, she takes private lessons and this year is in a flute choir.

Last year she was in a honor band and she was so excited to play with a really good band. She has expressed interest in going to a summer camp next summer.

I would like to know if anyone has any knowledge of arts camps. If you went or your child went, how competitive are they. They are very expensive but they offer scholarships, I would like to know if anyone applied for one and are they really hard to get.

If any Michigander's are reading this, do you know anything about Blue Lake or Interlochen. Her flute teacher says that Blue Lake is a little less competive and that might be better for her. She likes playing but I don't think that she's going to be a music major.

We went to music camp every year for 1 - 2 week sessions at a time.

They were competative depending on the directors they hired for the year....some years were fun AND stressful and other years were a lot of work, and just a wee bit of fun.

Truth be told, we enjoyed just going to camp even when they made us work hard.
One year my folks were going to send us to Interlochen but I just wasn't serious enough about my cello playing for them to invest the money for that particular location. I hear it's a wonderful place with great instructors though.

To give you an idea how UNserious I was about the cello, at the end of camp we gave a big concert for our parents/families when they came to pick us up.

My folks couldn't find me in the orchestra, because I wasn't in the string section. I wanted to play the DRUMS instead, so the instructors taught me a bit of drums on our off-time and for the concert then, I played percussion! I THOUGHT my parents were gonna kill me because I hadn't done much cello work during camp, but they were cool with it.
