Murtha on Gitmo

Based upon past comments on his Constituents he does not think that Highly of them and does not really care about them. Maybe Murtha should be more like Barney Frank who steered TARP money to a Boston Bank even if it didn't qualify

He should step up and have them all move into his house. What a reality show THAT would make!

That's kind of convenient for him, since Murtha's district only contains a minimum-security prison.

Murtha only has a minimum security prison in his district. But he says he'd have no reservations about holding detainees there in a maximum security prison.
Bolding mine

Makes it all go down a little easier if your district gets a big Federal installation out of it. Maybe he's going for a Supermax East... I can't even imagine being on the jury pool for any of the prisoners ((shudder)).

agnes!

Yeah, that's great. Let's put them in the general population and allow them to mix with a group that is already angry at what they perceive to be unjust treatment. (of course, they could have chosen not to break the law, but I digress)

You mean this Murtha?

In 1959, Murtha, then a captain, took command of the 34th Special Infantry Company, Marine Corps Reserves, in Johnstown. He remained in the Reserves after his discharge from active duty until he volunteered for service in the Vietnam War, serving from 1966 to 1967, serving as a battalion staff officer (S-2 Intelligence Section), receiving the Bronze Star with Valor device, two Purple Hearts and the Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry. He retired from the Reserves as a Colonel in 1990, receiving the Navy Distinguished Service Medal.

He knows war and he is against the Iraqi war. He must be out of his mind.

:happytv: As long as it doesn't interfere with "The Office" or "Real Housewives of (you pick the state)", I'll watch.

This was mentioned in the interview on TV this morning. Murtha indicated that he didn't feel they were any more dangerous than other prisoners in his district.

The man is 75. Could it be possible dementia is setting in? :confused3

Until these prisoners are tried, no one really knows the answer to that question.
They are POWs. They should not receive a trial. Closing Gitmo without another viable POW camp is a huge mistake, IMO. 11% of those released to date have returned to terrorism - and those were the BEST of the lot...

What does his Vietnam experience have to do with attempting to get some Federal $$ for his district? :confused3

No, they are not POWs. Because of certain protections afforded POWs by the Geneva Conventions, the Bush Administration decided early on that they did not want to classify them as such. You can't "legally" turn the screws on a POW as easily as you can on an "enemy combatant".

Could be he is right and you just don't agree with him..:confused3

Could it be that many did not agree with McCain also? I do not how many times on the DIS people made reference to him having dementia. Any who John Murtha is an IDIOT and maybe him and Pelosi could open up a B&B for the detainees and make up for our horrible actions.

You mean 89% returned to normal life? Wow..They must have had a great deal of stamina.

Mc Cain, an actual POW, is the staunchest supporter of stopping torture, and also was going to close Gitmo.
