Mum's panic attacks are getting to be horrible and I don't know how to help...

Forgive me, but I don't remember all your mother's details. What is her illness?

I will relate a bit about my late DMIL's home hospice care situation.

She was diagnosed with cancer in August, died in December. Her last 3 months were spent in home hospice care. She tok a few medictions daily...1 to keep her heart beat regular...it had become irregular and the feeling of it bothere her. She had a brain tumor so was on anti-seizure medication. We also had her on a pain patch and some prednisone if I recall, although I don't know what the prednsione was for...maybe breathing???? She had lung cancer as well. Anyhow, we also had some liquid morphine in the house, prescribed by her MD, in the event that her pain got suddenly worse. Because she also had lung cancer, I told my DH that if he was staying with her & she became acutely short of breath, he should give her some of the morphine because it would slow down her breathing and calm her down. But she was totally comfort measures only.

Have you considered calling the docor yourself? Sometimes they get millions of calls from home care agencies, so I think sometimes they do the eyeroll and WHOOPS! we got cut off. Have your pharmacy's phone # ready.

If your mother is a DNR-comfort, then I would ask the MD for a stronger anti-anxiety medication and give it to her...espcially if she is a DNR-Comfort. And if you end up giving it to her more frequently than necessary to get her anxiety unbder control, then so be it. Let the doctor know you are giving her more than recommended but at this point, fi she is a DNR-Comfort it doesn't matter. What matters is the patient.

These come to mind as well:
~ Depending on your mother's diagnosis, you should ave enough medication in the house that you should be able to say "Oh anxiety, I'll give her this".
~ If her diagnosis is one where it could change her personality ?(ie-brain tumor) then think of that
~ She could be getting dementia and sundowning since you say it seems to happen after dark
If she has cancer, could it be a braim tumor?
