Multiple Contract Point Usage

Hey everyone,

I have lurked here for a long time but only recently decided to start posting. I have seen lots of useful info and it has really inspired my wife and I to possibly purchase DVC. Just got back from the sales office and loved it.

I tried searching through the forums for an answer to this particular question but could not find it so I thought I would ask. Its regarding multiple contracts and/or borrowing points.

Lets say I own and VGF, and my parents own at BLT, or I were to borrow from BLT. I want to stay at BLT so can I book at the 11 month window by using the borrowed or rented points from that resort? Is there a minimum amount of points I would need to borrow/rent to do that?

Along those lines as well, if I want to book at BLT, I assume I would have to use all the BLT points I have available to me before I could use my VGF points to pay for the reservation in full.

Thank you for the help,

Chris

No, there is no minimum requirement for borrowing. It's just whatever you need to complete the reservation (and of course has to fit within the home resort and non-home resort booking timeframes). As far as transfers between owners you are limited to either one in or one out per UY so you definitely wouldn't want to do too few.

For the second question you must be referring to booking at 7 months or less because you could not use VGF points at BLT prior to that. But at 7 months it does not matter which points you use so you could use your VGF points first for BLT if you wanted to. When you have multiple contracts and are booking online you are asked to prioritize which contracts the points are used from first.

if you are asking how to turn VGF (or any other non-BLT) pts into BLT pts, there is no way to do that.

if you want to book BLT at 11 months out, you need BLT pts. they have to come from a BLT contract specifically. you can transfer them from a BLT contract to your account, you can rent them from a BLT owner, but nothing can alchemically turn non-home resort pts into home resort pts.

some would say you need the right "currency", as BLT will only accept BLT pts for booking at 11 months out.

One other thing. Transferred points retain their home resort and UY and can only be banked and cannot be borrowed.

From your question you were kind of combining 2 types of scenarios and there are a few differences between using contracts that you own and using points from transfers.

Some rules to remember:

1. Only points identified with a resort can be used to reserve 11 months out at that particular resort. Thus, only VGF points can be used for a VGF reservation 11 months, only BLT points can be use for a BLT reservation 11 months, etc. for each DVC resort. That rule applies even if you personally own two resorts. Thus, if you had both VGF and BLT points, only the VGF points could be used at VGF at 11 months out and only the BLT points could be used at BLT 11 months out.

2. At 7 months out you can mix all the points together from the different resorts you own to make one reservation at any resort. There is no rule that you use up any particular points first, e.g., if you own at both VGF and BLT, you could, if you chose, use only the VGF points to make a resservation at BLT at 7 months out.

3. At any given time, and assuming points have not already been previously used, you will have, via banking or borrowing, three possible use years of points to use for a reservation. Example: assume you have an April use year and today, Sep 8, 2014, you want to make a reservation at your home resort using home resort points for August 8-15, 2015. You can do that today because you are exactly 11 months out from date of arrival. The points you could use for that reservation are determined by when you will be at WDW not by when you call to reserve, and would consist of the following: (a) your April 2014 use year points but only if you bank them into your April 2015 use year; (b) your points that will be effective for your April 2015 use year; those would be your "current" use year points for that Aug 2015 trip; and (c) points from your April 2016 use year but you would need to borrow them for that Aug 2015 trip. There is no minimum to number of points you must borrow or bank if needed but the obvious maximum is the number of points you have.

Thank you very much everyone. That is a very big help.

And sorry for posting the thread in the wrong forum.

Cheers

Hey guys,

Another quick question for you and I didn't want to start another thread just for this.

Is there any charges for short stays (i.e 1, 2, or 3 day stays?) for housekeeping services etc? At other timeshares there are extra charges if you don't stay a whole week so I wasn't sure if that was the case here. I know a lot of people here do that so I figured there must not be one.

Also along those lines, I am told there are services for moving your bags from one resort to another for split stays? How do you find this service?

Thanks again, and sorry for all the nooby questions.

Housekeeping comes every four days, alternating full or trash/towel service. If you want more frequent service, there is an additional charge, but nothing extra for a short stay.

To have your bags moved, you can either call bell services to come pick them up in your room, or drop them at the bell desk. They can even keep items refrigerated if necessary. When you check in, bell services will bring your bags to your room (you cannot pick them up). Moving bags between resorts can take most of the day; don't expect them to arrive prior to 4 p.m. A gratuity is customary when a bellhop handles your bags.

Since when can you not pick up your bags from Bell Services?

Have you been able to pick up your bags when they are transferred during the day? All the research I've done on split stays indicates that bell services requires delivery of those bags.

I know that they want to deliver to get a better tip but in the past on occasion, we have picked up our bags at bell services. They don't like it and grunt and groan probably due to the way tips are handled if you pick up.

DME luggage is a different animal, they don't collect their internal payment/tip unless the luggage is delivered to the room.

It's all about the money. :(
