Mubarak to step down

Saw that on yahoo news. :thumbsup2

The live video on CNN is unbelievable. If Mubarek DOESN'T announce his departure today (or worse, gets on tv and says he isn't leaving right now), that square is going to implode. I just heard the CNN reporter say the same thing and to warn all the journalists to essentially be prepared to run for it.

Wuh oh...info minister says he IS NOT stepping down...However a senior official is saying that he will. The Prime Minister says Mubarek is still in power and hasn't made any plans yet.

Yikes.

Obama speaking right now...Supposed to mention Egypt.

Essentially he said "we are witnessing history unfold"...the people of Egypt calling for change...young people....and America will continue to support an orderly transition to a democracy.

Wow...the deodorant thread and Justin Beiber thread somehow keeps making it to the top of the page, but NOBODY is following the historical events unfolding before our very eyes in Egypt???

What are the possible implications of what's happening in Egypt? Could it lead to other countries in the middle east experiencing similar civil uprisings?

I don't know, but Egypt is a huge US ally in the middle east...and if Egypt becomes de-stabilized, Israel is going to have a huge problem on it's hands.

I try and keep up with the events, but one problem that I see is that the vice president that he appointed was formerly head of the secret police.

It will be interesting to see how the people react to that situation.

I would hope that no more deaths result, but I know that is probably not going to be the case.

Well, I haven't opened those two, but I did read this! I think this is a very scary situation and most Americans are looking at the situation with rose colored glasses... thinking yeah democracy...everything will be great. Things could be great or it could be very very bad depending on which group takes over.

Watching the BBC coverage of this, and it's amazing what Tahrir Square has become over the past few weeks.

To say I'm waiting with "baited breath" is an understatement. If Mubarek does not step down, well Tahrir square isn't likely going to be a good place to be, but if he does...well, there's a big unknown too.

That's the thing. There have been no alternatives, other than military rule & Suleiman coming to power, put forth. The whole military thing is iffy. They may say that it is only temporary, but who knows? :confused3

Whatever happens in the next few hours is truly going to be historic no matter what.

Exactly.

Wake up, people. This is big.
Remember Iran? Iraq? Afghanistan?

Egypt could be much, much bigger than any of them, due to their proximity to Israel.

Just because Egypt is close to Israel, that doesn't mean that their populace isn't entitiled to democracy and self-determination. I don't think Suleiman will be accepted by the protestors.
