Lisa from MS just called.

She said Vero will not be open for our reservation on Tuesday (something we expected.)

She said they were calling everyone with reservations in the next 7 days.

She also said the Manager of the resort has not been allowed near the resort to inspect the damage.

I read the local authorities were keeping eveyryon West of US 1 and not letting people near the coast yet.

Hope this helps someone.

Very sad. I hope the resort hasn't suffered too much damage.

Thanks for posting this, floridafam. We are hoping to reschedule a few nights soon, when the resort reopens.

Very kind of MS to contact members on a Sunday. ...Of course - there's not much more for all of us to be doing right now, but ride this thing out! That, and eat our hurricane provisions! :)

I'm sad to hear this but at least it answers the question for you. At the very least, there is no power so they probably don't want to open until they are assured of water & power. They also may be allowing the CMs to tend to their homes as well.

On MSNBC they have been reporting from a marina in Melbourne. Although it was in a cove, it was not sheltered by land and appears to probably be a total loss with major damage to the large boats and to the docks. A local came by and said that another nearby marina that had land on 3 sides was okay but then...

his friend reported to him that the marina at Captain Hiram's was a total loss and that the restaurant was also destroyed and is filled with boats. :(

Thanks for posting this, Pam - I was worried about that place, too.

Me too. Unfortunately it took this storm's full force. The good news is it was only a lower catagory two hurricane at landfall and not a Cat 4 or 5. That fact should have given VB a fighting chance.

Just after dawn, Vero Beach police Lt. Daniel Cook made a quick tour of Central Vero Beach.

''There's a lot of roof damage, a lot of trees down, mostly power lines and trees in the road,'' he said.

Cook added that late Saturday he watched the storm take parts of the 2001 Building in downtown Vero Beach. It looked like ''a deck of cards falling off the top,'' Cook said.

All of State Road 60 was strewn with power lines, building debris and aluminum. Most of Indian River Boulevard, which parallels the west side of Indian River, is flooded. Police were on their way to check the fate of 12 people who spent the night in the community building of Fairlane Harbor Mobile Home Park, which is east of Indian River, right on the water.

Other than that, Cook said, police are staying off the road until the winds calm down. Winds were estimated to be 70 to 80 mph.

Lt. Ted Twitchell, who had been in the Emergency Operations Center overnight, said there's still a great deal of storm out there.

''We've got until noon before the hurricane winds stop,'' Twitchell said, adding he is concerned about people going outside during relative periods of calm only to be slammed with a 90 mph gust.

Storm rages on in Vero Beach

7:11 a.m. Sunday

First light in Vero Beach gave vision to the horrific sounds of the night. At 7 a.m. Vero Beach was still in the belly of the worst part of the storm and was expected to be there for another three hours.

The city was raked with bands of heavy rain pushed by an occasional gust of wind clocked at more than 100 mph.

As soon as possible, people want to get to the beach to see how two of Florida's landmarks fared: The Driftwood Inn, one of the oldest hotels in the area, and The Ocean Grille, long one of the area's favorite restaurants. Both are on the Atlantic Ocean, in the center of the barrier island district.

:(

I could see the roof of the slide coming off, or the outer slide section, but the structure itself is concrete. Eb and Flows could be in trouble, as well as the community room. No telling the structure of the support buildings across the street, I've not seen what they are made of. Severe erosion could take out all of the beach cottages. The walkway to the beach is probably gone. Just guesses.

They just had a gentleman on CNN that said Captain Hiram's is destroyed. How sad. CNN said it was heading down that way.

I just saw the same report about Cap't Hirams. I can't believe it's gone. We go there at least once every trip. :(

Here's hoping that the resort is still pretty much intact. The reports about severe flooding in the area are scary. There were pictures of destroyed mobile homes in Wabasso (that's just across the bridge from DVC). very scary photos.

Hope they let the staff in as soon as it's safe.
Fingers crossed here for everyone down there.::yes::
