I was thinking about visiting Mrytle Beach for two nights on the way back from Florida. Obviously it is a tourist destinatin, what would it compare to as a tourist destination? Is it worth a visit. We were thinking of staying at the Sheraton Boardwalk which appears to be very similar in design to the Vistana Villages resort in Orlando. Also is there anything that is a must do there?

Would help to know who was going (ages) and what time of year?

We detoured going down to Florida early March of last year.( almost a 2hr detour) We stayed at Oceans One Resort and can highly recommend it. Wonderful 2br condo direct oceanfront. Perfect 11th floor view. Full kitchen and laundry. That said...that time of year nothing was really open yet. We were about 2-3 weeks early. Had a fabulous meal at Rios (Brazillian steakhouse) would definatley do again. It was right across the street from Broadway at the Beach which is a must do.

We are a bit biased, having lived there for six years, but YES!
There is a great skywheel. Fun tourist trap shops on the Pavilion, stop in the Gay Dolphin for a sharks tooth necklace.
Broadway at the Beach is fun, lots of little shops, movie theater, and food.
The water in summer is nice, especially less crowded on the south end, nearer to Surfside Beach. Still part of the Grand Strand, but not as many stores packed in such a small area.
Love to tell you more if interested, pm me.

We did exactly that a few years ago. We stopped for 2 night on our way to DW for my DH's birthday. Stayed at the Hilton on the Beach. Great location. North of the busy beach area. The beach is beautiful and there is so much to do if you go in the summer. We spent one late afternoon into evening at Broadway on the Beach. Dined at the Hard Rock Cafe and walked around the shops. There's a zip line across the lake, speed boats and A Disney Quest type of place. Get there early, the parking lots were full when we left.

Looking to go back. Would like to stay 3 nights next time.

YES!!! We stayed at the Marriott north of the main beach area, great pool right on the beach, water slide, indoor pool, great property! Broadway at the Beach is great, two nice outlet centers if that's your thing. Crabby Mikes is a great buffet south of the city! Enjoy!

I might be biased as well, our 2nd home is there, but a big YES!!! There is so much to do and if you feel like doing nothing the beaches are clean and beautiful! The best place to get any and all your Myrtle info is www.funbeaches.com They have a message board there just like here and the folks are friendly and very helpful! Tell them Emmy sent you :wave2:

Emmy on Funbeaches? Who is that? LOL, hi Emmy :wave2:

Myrtle as a detour? Heck, Myrtle is our number 1 destination. I only browse here on the budget and community board. I doubt I'll ever be back to Disney.

It's possible that you are the one who steered me over to Funbeaches.

And on the note of "small world", I was sitting in the pool at the Dayton House with the kids when I noticed someone sitting up on the chairs looked familiar. It was Parrothead (Jeff) whom I took the recommendation of the Dayton House from. Saw him later on the beach and introduced and chatted for a bit.

Seems everywhere I go it's a small world. I remember sitting in traffic as a kid in Ocean City and Dad says, "look at that guy who just walked behind the car." It was our neighbor who's yard bordered the back of our yard.

Walking down Ocean Blvd in Myrtle when I was 15 years old I run right into Dave, a kid my age that lived right down the road. We got together to run around Myrtle and we run into Curt, another good friend from the other side of town. Had a blast that vacation.

The next year my brother and I met 2 sisters on the beach, both 1 year of age from each of us, unfortunately as they were putting their toes in the sand for the last time before going home. They were from the town half an hour from us. Gave them a call when we got home.

I've told this one on the board here. I drive 1100 miles in 2 days to get away from the day to day stress of work. I arrive at Pop Century and the very first thing I see is a giant pile of foam "Lego" blocks. "Lego" in quotes because they aren't Lego brand but tells you what they pretty much are. I made the materials they were molded from. It was from the first production trial run which I can tell from the multi-colored ones. So the very first thing I see driving 1100 miles away from work for stress relief is work!

One reason I think Myrtle Beach is a good beach is that the beaches are nice and flat. While I was growing up, my family usually went to Carolina Beach, then Myrtle Beach for family vacations.

I visited Ocean City, MD and the beach just dropped off to almost a cliff right at the water's edge. It was shocking to me and very disappointing as that was our only beach trip planned for a couple of years (DS was born 3 months later).

Lots of people from my area visit Myrtle Beach. A couple of different years, we pulled onto Ocean Blvd and saw My kid is an honor student at our local Elementary school bumper stickers.

If you want to get away from the most crowded places, you should stay in North Myrtle or South Myrtle.. Not in Myrtle itself.

We love Myrtle! My family and I have gone for the past 4 years. Defiantly worth the stop! We stay at the Caravelle Resort between North Myrtle and Myrtle Beach. It's less crowded and more family friendly as opposed to the downtown Myrtle area which can be very, very busy. But yet everything is within a 5 - 10 min drive depending on traffic. We always get the Ocean Front King suite, which has a full kitchen. The beach itself is awesome, we are beach combers and have found buckets upon buckets of beautiful shells and some shark teeth. If you have time check out Broadway at the Beach and Barefoot Landing. Both places will keep you busy for days. We personally like the Ripleys aquarium at Broadway, and Alligator Adventure at Barefoot Landing. For dinner check out the Pirates Adventure Fun and Feast, great dinner show my Dh, and DS 7 loves it! I do too. The sky wheel is really cool, and Family Fun Kingdom, a small amusement park by the beach is fun too. Mammy's Kitchen in the downtown area serves an awesome breakfast buffet, very affordable as well. Also check out the 2nd ave pier, you could easily spend an afternoon or evening watching the fisherman or rent a pole yourself and do some fishing, we have done this numerous times. We also love the state parks, very quiet and beautiful. There is so much to do, we have been going for some time now and still haven't seen or done everything, and we usually stay for a full week each trip. But then again when we are at the beach we usually sloow down anyways and tend not to be in a rush. We are counting the days down until our next beach trip in June!!

OT a little, but DS is looking to relocate to the Myrtle Beach area. We may also move there in a year or so. Any suggestions for nice areas to look in? Not the super rich areas, say under $200,000?

We would not have to be right at the beach, 30-30 minutes away would be fine.

thanks in advance.

Depending on where you are coming from and the time of year plus how much time vacation do you get go for it. It will be a nice driving break.

OT, but you aren't from Trumbull, CT are you? The reason I ask is because I am from there but dint currently live there. But everywhere we go we meet someone from Trumbull or who knows someone from Trumbull.

We were at Disney in the 80s and we saw our neighbors in the turnstiles (they lived 1/2 mile away but still the same neighborhood ). That same trip my sister saw someone.

Fast forward a few years, we were in line for Peter Pan and there was a family with Trumbull shirts on. The dad went to school/knew my oldest sister.

Our school nurses BIL lives in Trumbull (I ,ive about an hour away), the 1st grade teacher graduated from trumbull high like me but I am older by about 5 years. At the middle school, my oldest dd told one of the teachers she was going to trumbull to her aunts for Christmas and that teacher said she was going to her sisters. My neighbors have family in Trumbull.

The weirdest thing I was not present at, my dh was flying home from a work trip. The connection was in Atlanta. The person on that flight to Atlanta and he were talking...the where are you from. My dh said CT, the guy said he is originally from CT but now lives in the mid west. My dh told him where he was. From and I am sure the guy had the puzzled look like I had since it is a small town and I never heard of it. Either my dh or the guy mentioned trumbull. My dh said I was from there and the guy said he was from there. Turns out he graduated with my middle sister (I am the baby).

So yeah...Trumbull anyone?

So to hijack op.

He's two years older/two classes ahead of you. You might know him. Funny. He is the youngest of five but the other four are 9+ years older than him.

LOL on Trumbull, small world indeed.

And no, I'm not from Trumbull, or from CT. I'm in north western PA.

My mother was with a guy she was seeing visiting his family in Michigan. They were having some neighborhood picnic thing and she was talking to one of the guys from the neighborhood. She mentions that she lives in western PA. He says he works with some folks over there, a little town called Butler. That's where she lives. He mentions the company he works for. She says, that's where my son works. He mentions the guys he comes over here to work with and my name is mentioned. She says, yeah, that's my son!

Mom couldn't remember his name when she told me. She just said, he looked like Dauber from the TV show Coach. I said, yeah, Gary! That's exactly what we call him, Dauber! LOL

yes yes this is the best time to visit my home no tourist holding up traffic it's a little cold right now the only downside it do suppose to warm back up.:bitelip::bitelip:
