Moving to Orlando!

Matt and myself will be apartment hunting and spending a great deal of time at WDW in early March. We're planning to move in May. We'd really appreciate any help from locals and hoping to build a new network of friends in the area. We're twenty-somethings starting our careers so dirt-cheap is good.

You may want to look at renting a house instead of an apartment. If you dont mine mowing your own lawn, it can be a much better deal.

Dirt cheap doen't much work in the Greater Orlando area. Depending upon where you work, and what it is you will be doing, you may want to explore options that are further out of Orlando. Davenport has some good options sometimes.

Winter Garden may still have a place or two left that isn't crazy expensive.

There are several rent controlled (minimum income limits apply) places around, if you can get an apartment in one. You'll need your tax returns.

Renting a house really is the best way if you can find one where you want it and at a price you can afford.

Don't get frustrated. It nearly drove us over the edge when we first started looking around in the Greater Orlando area. We did manage to find something doable though, and so will you.

I got sick of renting and finally bought a manufactured home. Even with lot rent my monthly payments are much cheaper than most apartments around.

That being said, Cagan Crossings on 192 and 27 in Clermont has some nice apartments for a low price

I have a small two level home north of Disney, but have wondered if I should have purchased a manufactured home? Mostly for the cost...

But, I'm worried about the lot rent sitatuation. I don't trust the owner of the land not to sell it out from under the tenants. That's happened before here with disasterous results for the manufactured home owners.

My partner's Mom lives in one, but she owns the land on which the home sits (Polo Park) so that isn't an issue with her.

Are you happy with the manufactured home? Do you find it necessary to leave during hurricane warnings...tornadoes?

Still not sure which would have been the best choice (property taxes are increasing as we speak).

Cagan's Crossing is big and when they finish the construction it looks like it will be twice as big. That whole section of 27 has really grown over the last few years. Lots of apartment complexes and housing developments popping up. I have family in the area so I'm there quite often.

Yes. I was just by there today and the development of that area is going on full tilt. Avalon/545 is underway as well. Not quite as dramatically, but it's starting to build up (especially when you get to the Winter Garden limits).

My manufactured home went through the hurricane season of '04 and didnt loose a shingle. There's something to be said about a house that's welded together instead of nailed LOL.

Polo Park is a great development, and I would love to live there but my current credit situation wouldnt let me. The development I'm in let me do a rent-to-own since I only had $500 down and a credit score of 471 (at the time LOL)

The home it's self is nice. It's only a single wide, but I have about 1100 square feet of living space in 3bedrooms, 2 baths. Or should I say 1 bedroom, one office, and one storage room? ( I have WAY too much junk lol). Also important to me, it has a nice-sized kitchen

I don't have advice but want to say GOOD LUCK I am trying to coax DH into moving there in the next few years..i dream of it daily. He loves his job so I guess once I can find a way to find another job he'll love (HAHA) or make us instant millions then we can go!

FL law just requires that at least 3/4 of the resident population be age 55 or over for the development to recieve recognition as a "55+ community." As long as you don't put them out of that range, they can't legally keep you out.

I'm only 25, but when I want something I research all the details on how I could get it hehe.

The newer ones (built after hurricane Andrew) are required to match the same construction guidelines as site-constructed homes (at least in FL).

So basically, if the home was built in 1993 or after, you're good to go

Yes, I know that there is a portion of the Polo Park community that is under 55, but they have reached their "young quota." I checked.

However, I don't have as long to wait as you before I hit the qualifying age. Not nearly as long!

"Manufactured Homes" are not the "Trailers" of the past, but it is always fun to remember the good ole days when there were "Trailer Parks". (Anyone else remember the Yogi Bear campground right off of I-4 between Disney and the Kirkman exit back in the day)

Anyway, for fun, do a search for the "Monsters of the Mid-day" version of "Trailer Trash". They are local DJ's and the song is hysterical!

We live in Legacy Dunes just off of 192, right to the east of where it crosses 27, in the 4 Corners area. The rent is fairly affordable, for the Orlando area, at least, and we can see WDW fireworks from our porch

Howdy neighbor! I live just down Old Lake Wilson road (near champions gate) so you're just around the corner!

I like the 4-corners area myself since it's easy to get just about anywhere, but you're still not in the middle of everything.

I know where Old Lake Wilson Road is - we drive by there every time we go to WDW And my DH drives by there every time he goes to work (Celebration).

Four Corners is convenient for his work, but with all the construction on 27, it's kind of a mess right now. I'm a teacher in Lake County schools, so our apt is centrally located for both of our jobs, but we actually want to move further out, to Clermont. The whole tourist thing gets a bit old after while - traffic on 192 was miserable that whole Christmas to New Year's week.

OMG to see the fireworks from your home - I'd be in heaven LOL! I do plan to move to FL eventually. If my partner and his Mother get it together! I could work from anywhere out of my home, and if I went down there with my salary - we would be fine. I think within 10 years we'll be there!
