Moving Away Gift?

My best friend will be moving to another state in May. They are planning a last get together for friends and family. Is a gift expected? and if so, what would you bring?

I don't think a gift is required, but it would be nice. If this was a close friend, maybe you could get something that has a friendship poem written on it, you could put together a scrapbook of things you had done together, a stationary set and a phone card so that the both of you can keep in touch...

I would not think gifts were expected. They are moving & don't need a bunch more "stuff". The idea of the scrape book, stationary & phone card was good. Perhaps you could get a phone book & record all of the party guests name, addresses, phone # & emails so they would have it in a central location.

We had seriously considered a 500 mile move. We were already planning a bash for all of our friends - the idea that they would bring gifts never entered our minds. We just want one last gathering with all of our friends.

edited to add: You could also give a gift card for something they might need at their new home- HomeDepot, Sears, Walmart, Target

When i was reading your post, I also thought phone card or gift card but people beat me to it .I would appreciate a phone card more I think.

A restaurant gift card would be nice. Moving is hectic, and there usually isn't alot of time to cook. Getting away from all the unpacking and sitting down to a nice meal would be great.

I'd suggest a nice frame, maybe one that says "Best Friends" with your favorite picture of you two inside (look at Target or Michaels for one, or have a silver one engraved at Things Remembered). Tucking a phone card inside would be nice, too. And I love the stationary idea. Basically, they're all things that say you treasure her friendship and know that it will continue despite the distance
