My family just found out we are being relocated. My son has Asperger's and has had a one-on-one para with him for the past 3 years. She has been WONDERFUL and I need some ideas on something to do for her before we move. I don't want to just get her a little gift or a gift card. I want something REALLY special for her. Do any of you have any ideas?

There is really nothing material that you can give that will represent your appreciation and the difference she has made in you son’s life (unless of course you have a spare million $). Some small gift and a heartfelt letter from you and your child would be the most valuable thing, along with if she wants keeping her updated on his progress and how the foundation she laid is blossoming. A letter to the head of special education and the manager of the paraprofessional program saying what a difference she made and how any future students with aspergers that are fortunate enough to have her as a para will have a bright future.

A framed photo of your son with a nice sentiment written on the back would be nice. Or a scrapbook documenting the last 3 years would be appreciated, too. I also second the letter to the head of special ed. with a copy to the school board. :cool2:

I'm a special education aide in elementary school. I was 1 on 1 with a boy for 2 years, then his family moved. The mom got me a certificate for a massage (which was wonderful, but not necessary at all!). She also wrote me a very heartfelt note, and included her cell number so we can stay in touch. School started up again on Sept. 1. There is a big empty spot in my heart. I miss that little guy so much:sad:
I guess what I'm trying to say is the sentiment of how much this person helped your child, family, etc. will have the biggest impact.

Okay...here is what I decided. I have contacted all of the teachers and administrators that have seen her interaction with Jack and have worked with her during the past few years. I asked them each to write a short note of appreciation and I will put them all in a scrapbook along with letters from me and Jack. I will also write a letter to the superintendent, principal, head of Special Services and the head of the AEA and put a copy of that in the scrapbook. Any other ideas??
