Moving & Adjusting

we will be in the same boat next month. we are moving 900 miles and 2 states away from the only place dh,dd, ds and i have ever known.

i know it will be a huge adjustment, so i'm trying to get info. on activities and places we can do soon after arrival to start feeling like a part of the community. but i'm also not cutting all ties back home-to leave some 'sameness' for me and the kids. i will be biting the bullet and paying for a few plane trips so the kids can do a couple of check-up/follow up appointments with their existing pedicatrician and orthopedist. i'm going to go ahead and schedual my next follow ups with my doctor on the same day so i don't have to adjust to another doctor right away either. i'm also encouraging dd (12) to get everyone at schools(whopping 24) email addresses so she can stay in contact. we've arranged for their yearbooks to be passed around by the teacher and sent to us at the end of the year. the school photos just taken will be sent to us as well. the kids have spent as many as 6 years at that school and had the same 2 teachers and classmates the whole time-it will be a huge adjustment for them.

i'm not terribly comfortable making new friends but i know i will have to make an effort-so i'm looking into classes at the local college and activities i can volunteer for (kids school will be a biggie). it's a way i can meet people in a setting that's somewhat familiar and lends itself to talking.

i don't know how it will work out-but it's something we've talked and dreamed of doing for several years. the thing is we originaly planned on renting for 6 months just to make sure we liked the place, but a visit 2 weeks ago found me finding our dream house on our dream property at a price us native californians have'nt considered dreaming of for decades-so we made the leap and are buying:scared1: on the positive end it will entail less change moving into a permanant home vs. being in a rental for an extended period of time and having to deal with the changes that brings.

maybe we can start a support group for recently out of state movers-we can vent, lament, and hopefully share some positive experiences (though i don't think i am ever going to get used to the concept of living in a state where they don't sell hard liquor at walmart, longs or the local grocery store:drinking1  .
