We just joined Netflix, but I am overwhelmed! What should I watch? I don't watch a ton of TV (Lost, The Office, Modern Family, Glee, and The Big Bang Theory, True Blood). I like all kinds of films, but I don't care for violent films(Saw). The last few movies I've seen were: The Prince of Persia, Avatar, Diasry of a Wimpy Kid. There were more I'd like to have seen, but I am too busy to go often. I know this is pretty broad, but what should I watch?!? Any recommendations?

If you can get the series The Vampire Diaries, watch it!! I started watching it thinking it would be kind of dumb but OK to fill time between True Blood seasons. Wow- it turned out to be a really well paced, riveting show!

I would suggestion going through the process Netflix has of rating movies you have already seen. It will then try to recommend movies based on how you rated movies and compare that to other people who rated movies the same as you and list movies that those people liked that you haven't rated.

Or something like that.

Use the Netflix recommendations. Spend a little time rating the movies that you've already watched. Then Netflix will start recommending ones to you. They are not always right, but they do a pretty good job in my experience.

I am a list person, so I use the site listsofbests.com to make my Netflix queue. I pick something like "Best Movies of 2009" and try to watch everything off of it - or "Academy Award Best Actress Winners."

And if you can set up the instant Netflix streaming to your TV, I highly recommend it. We go through our Wii and it is literally like having a video store in your house. They don't have the latest releases, but they have thousands and thousands of choices. I really only get about 2 DVDs a month now and watch most everything else instantly.

I watched the first episode but got behind. Maybe I'll pick it back up!

Waiting for my disc to arrive!

If you like Lost, I'd recommend trying Fringe. It is also a JJ Abrams creation, has some excellent actors, and is character-centered while also having a deep mythology (maybe not as deep as Lost's, but still intriguing). At first, it seems a bit like The X-files, but the longer it goes, the more you begin to see the mythology being revealed. I highly recommend it; with Lost having ended, it is now my favorite show currently on the air.

Season one is available now, and the second season should be out in September, most likely (judging from when season one was released last year).

If you've looking for TV shows..

Weeds
Dexter
The Tudors
Californication
Friday Night Lights
Deadliest Catch
The Sopranos
Six Feet Under

I've been slooowly working my way through all of those, and am pretty impressed with all of them.

Some movies I've seen recently, or are currently on my queue:

Where the Wild Things Are
Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory -- I like to rewatch some of my favorites from when I was a kid. :goodvibes
Seven Pounds
Amelia
Sweeney Todd
Precious
Inglourious Basterds
Shutter Island
The Blind Side
Ray
(500) Days of Summer
Away We Go
King of California
The Darjeeling Limited
Coraline
Couples Retreat

I have to toss in a vote for Supernatural: plenty of myth based storylines, pretty people, great music and plenty of humor. But fair warning: when season 5 hits dvd its pretty dark at points.

That sounds awesome. I need a Lost-ish show.

We actually watched the first episode of The Tudors last night. OMG...was that on Skin-e-max? :rotfl2: I am trying to convince DH to watch Weeds. He thinks it's a girl's show!

Yeah.. it's a pretty sex-heavy show. But, that's pretty much how Henry VIII was. Plus, I think Jonathan Rhys Meyers is reeeally good looking, so I don't mind. haha. ;)

and Weeds is SO not a girls show! DF watches it with me, and he loves it. There's a good storyline and Hunter Parrish (:lovestruc) for me, and some violence and half naked scenes with Mary-Louise Parker for DF. It's a really funny show though, and it definitely sucks you in. I'm addicted!

I second Weeds!

And Hunter Parrish! When they first showed his new hair cut in the 4th season I was hooked. Pre-hair cut though, I didn't like him too much, funny how just a little change can make a difference :).

I love Doug and Andy too! And Shane in the season 5 finale... OMG :scared1:!!! I couldn't believe it! I can't wait until August.

One way to find good movies to watch is by checking out the AFI's Best of lists and seeing if there any movies on the list that you haven't seen.

for tv shows:

if you haven't seen The X-Files i HIGHLY suggest it! one of the best television shows in history!

i also recommend Veronica Mars and The 4400

a few other of my favs are Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel, Supernatural, and Vampire Diaries but idk if those would interest you.
