That's interesting. I didn't know someone was working on a Walt film. I wonder what's Disney's stance on this project.
I'm excited about the documentary as well. I've heard Disney opened their archives for the director of the documentary, which is surprising because apparently it shows Walt as a flawed man. Disney is super protective of Walt's image, but after Saving Mr. Banks, I'm glad to see that Disney is willing to show a more human side of the man.
Only issue I see with "official" is how objective it would be. The piece the OP referenced looks like it is trying to paint a balanced picture; if Disney had produced it you would have in all likelihood seen a more "processed" vision of the man's early life. Example: Walt was a chain smoker and it looks like the "Walt Before Mickey" storyline doesn't hide that, whereas "Saving Mr. Banks" pretty much buried it (one very short scene in the film shows Walt trying to hide his habit).
I've been following this movie the last month. I'm tempted to preorder the DVD, because of cool bonuses they offered and it looks like a fun movie. As for straight to DVD, their Facebook page has been replying to people who asked the same question, that it will be in theaters on August 14th. Although recently they're specifically saying AMC theater in Downtown Disney Orlando. So I'm not sure how widely it will be released
Thanks for sharing this. I ordered the DVD. It looks like a good movie based on trailer. David Henrie who was the oldest teen boy on Disney Channels "Wizards of Waverly Place" is in the movie as well
