mousekeeping tipping?

We have the same routine as mmiller711 - $5/day, left in the morning before we leave for the parks ( I put it under the little card that says "your room was cleaned by...). We had an interesting experience on our trip this past December. Our son got sick one night, so our usual routine of being up and out by 7:30 was broken as we slept in. When we left our room, our "mousekeeper" was down the hall. She rushed over to see if everything was alright! She told us that she was worried when we hadn't left early, and that she would clean the room right away so that it would be ready when we came back for DS nap. I was amazed at what close attention she paid (I was also relieved that we're pretty neat people, and never leave the room a mess - hehehe).

We tip $1/pp each day. I usually make envelopes and fill them before we leave. I know I would not keep up with it any other way. I like to do as much as I can before I leave because once I'm at Disney my brain turns to mush and I'm on nostalgia lane.

Just like I do with every service that 'requires' a tip, I tip when said service is completed (at the end of my stay) and based upon the quality of the service involved.

Tipping daily makes me feel as if I am bribing them to do a decent job cleaning the room.

I prefer to wait until the end of my stay and then tip in accordance to how I feel things were done. Normally, $1 or $2 a day, more if the service was exceptional. Since I usually travel alone, there's not a huge mess to be tended to daily.

Disney doesn't consider housekeeping a "tipped" position and tips are optional. But if you're going to tip you should tip daily. Suppose your last day is the day off for the housekeeper you had for the rest of your stay? Probably not what you intended. If you see the person who cleans your room and personally tip her your last night you'll avoid the problem but generally I'm not around when my room is cleaned.

I tip daily, because doing it the way you have described provides "Julie" with a $15 tip for cleaning my room one time, while "Mary", "Lisa", "Andrea" and "Joe" get nothing for all of their efforts.

I believe this is incorrect. Safetymom has posted in regards to this before with some information showing this is indeed considered a tipped position.

I like to giv e alittle gift at the end of my vacation, too. I thoroughly wash out my refillable mug and the rest of my families mugs, too, and let the housekeepers take them and use them, as long as the original buyer doesn't need to be the one. Maybe disney will start bioscans on the mugs. Bet you never thought anyone could ever sneak in a mug post on a tipping thread, did you???

We tip $1 per day per person. I think the service is actually completed on a day to day basis. We don't collectively tip one waiter for all the restaurants that we've eaten at for the week, why tip one mousekeeper?

We tip $4 or $5 per day.......why wouldnt you tip mousekeeping? You tip everyone else...valet, town car service, bell boys, waitress/waiter

In my opinion they are the ones who get the least tips and works the hardest.

****My kids love the surprises they leave inthe room One day we came back to the room and their stuffed animals were wearing their swimming goggles on the enge of the tub....too cute(that in itself is a memory of their trip)

Oh, one more thing. We write little thank you notes along with the tip and leave it on the counter.

Unless it's changed in the last year it's correct. Disney lists "tipped" positions and tipping guidelines in the resort "newspaper" you get when you check in and housekeeping has always been excluded. It's been posted that housekeepers makes at least the minimum wage and therefore is not a tipped position. From reading this board you'd think everyone tips, according to the NYTimes 70% of all hotel guests DON'T tip housekeeping.

I generally tip housekeeping but it's truly optional at Disney. Bellhops, valet, waiters and the like are "tipped" positions. If you fail to tip them then they're not being paid to serve you.

Some people believe housekeepers aren't paid enough and tip. Others say the characters who interact with our kids in the parks aren't paid any more than housekeeping and they don't get tipped.

I think that perception is held as well, but I feel like this....even if they make minimum wage, they still come in and pick up my dirty towels, give me clean ones, make two beds, wipe down my counters and sometimes do something extra.

If I had somebody come in my house to do it I would pay them, so I should also pay somebody who does it while I am on vacation. :) Especially considering that I would pay $50 - $100 to somebody to clean my house, I think a couple of bucks a day is a nice small way to say thanks. :earsboy:

ITA so I generally tip housekeeping. There are a lot of employees who don't make much more than housekeeping that we don't tip. I don't have much patience for guests whose budget tips include stiffing waiters and bellhops but I can understand guests who chose to follow Disney guidelines (assuming they haven't recently been changed) and don't tip housekeeping.

Sounds like we think a lot alike. :teeth:

I totally agree with u Lewisc.

if u are on a strict budget just to get your kids to Disney, then u most likely can not afford to tip everyone that deserves it. Lower than min. wage positions should get priority.

Just wanted to clarify that when we budget we NEVER stiff the "tipped" positions.

As far as the paying someone to come clean my house...well, my mortgage does not include a housekeeper...my room fee does. Now if they wanted to make housekeeping an optional service, then yep, i would agree.
