If we have enough time we'd like to stop at one of these two places on the way home from Williamsburg. We have two sons (9 & 14) who like more of the reenactment/acting type history things (think Jamestown) versus tours (more like Colonial Williamsburg). I've never been to either of these places. I'd love to hear any suggestions.

The votes are tallied and it looks like the winner is Monticello! Thanks all for your help!

We've done both and both were nice. I think Monticello had the upper hand because its just less crowded. Since Mount Vernon is close to DC, its really busy. Monticello is farther south and gets less visitors (at least that's been my experience). At Mount Vernon, we had to stand in a very long line to go into the house. This line was constant throughout the house and we could not even hear the tour guide at all. Monticello takes people inside in small groups so you get to hear and see everything. Its a beautiful place and the view of Charlottesville up there is awesome.

I went to both with my parents about...oh...15 years ago? Not quite that? And the one I remember the best is Monticello. :)

Monticello! It's really very nice. And the added benefit -- Michie's Tavern! That is the best food I've ever eaten! :p Yummy! You HAVE to eat there! Oh, and say hi to my sister as you drive through Cville!
