If you have been there on a vacation please tell me about your trip. We are planning one for the end of summer.

Need some ideas on where to stay rent pull behind or stay at motels, what to see and do.

We went a couple of years ago as a summer family vacation.

We stayed at a very nice (but reasonably priced) Country Inn and Suites right off the highway in Rapid City. We used it as our base as we visited Mt. Rushmore (day and night visits), Crazy Horse, and all the surrounding sites.

We had a great time and really enjoyed our trip.

We went a few years ago, it was pretty fun, we did some camping, saw Rushmore, its beuatiful at night ;) and panned for gold, had a fun time.

Stayed in a travelodge Keystone Paid 156.00 for 1 night. For 40.00 it would have been a consideration. Live and learn. We went for the 3rd of July. I would go again but stay somewhere else. Stayed at Econolodge in Custer for 108.00 a night. Again nothing special. Crazy horse is close.

We went there this past June. We stayed at the Super 8 in Custer, SD. It was clean and inexpensive (I wrote a review on tripadvisor if you want to see it.) We visited Mt. Rushmore twice, once in the evening for the lighting ceremony and once in the daytime. The parking is $10 and is good for the year. We also spent a couple nights in Rapid City at the Howard Johnsons.

You will definately want to vist Custer State Park. We saw tons of Bison there. You can also visit Sylvan Lake where filming of National Treasure 2 was done. There are several caves in the area, Wind Cave and Jewel Cave are 2 of them. Drive the Needles Highway.

You will be fairly close to the Badlands. I definately recommend a visit. Don't forget to stop at Wall Drug on the way for your free ice water!

We also visited Deadwood and Devil's Tower. You might want to consider visiting these places as well.

Have a great trip!

There are several Chuckwagon Dinner Shows in the Rapic City area. We went to one and had a fun time.

Keystone is only a few miles from Mt. Rushmore and a cute little town, versus driving 20 minutes from Rapid City. We stayed at the Holiday Inn in Keystone and thought it was nice. Custer State park was amazing. Definitely drive the Needles Scenic Highway. There is also Bear Country, Reptile Gardens and Cosmos nearby. We went in October so a lot of tourist places were already closed, but there are plenty of little gems to be found, just driving around that area--Prairie Berry Winery, good shopping deals, bison round-up... Check out TravelSD.com, and have them send you information.

We stayed at an excellent KOA at Mount Rushmore. Very scenic and very close to monument.
They also have camping cabins there and a hotel/resort on site if you're not into tent/trailer camping.

Rushmore is great--be sure to watch the movie there.

We made appt. ahead of time to do a dinosaur dig. It was at a real excavation site and was really cool. Google it--not sure of the name. It was a little ways from Rushmore (not far) and it was a big pit that wooly mammoths fell into.

We rode horses, went to a silly Flinstones land, Badlands, Deadwood, Wall's Drugstore, Devil's tower.

It was all fun, but Rushmore is the highlight and the dinosaur dig was the most memorable to them.
