Motorola Driod Phone

Anyone plan on buying this new phone? It's supossed to rival the iPhone. We have a Verizon contract that is about to expire & was wondering if this is worth a look? Thanks!

....my DS just got his today and he LOVES it! It's got a lot of great apps on it too....I don't know what all of them are yet, but one relly cool one is that it can read bar codes on items in a store and get you the best price for that item...

DH and his boss went out to lunch and his boss took him to the Verizon store afterwards. Everyone at work got one for their work phone(not everyone everyone..the higher ups that have work phones and need to keep in constant touch). DH uses his phone (we have a family plan) work gives him money every month for his phone. So they paid early upgrade fee for him to get the droid!

He loves it!! He used the GPS tonite on his way home. WHen it said you have arrived at your destination it showed a picture of our house!! :rotfl:

Hear a lot of people say "...my phone is just as good as an iPhone".

Never heard anyone say "...my iPhone is just as good as insert brand name here":ssst:

I want one but unfortunatly I can't get one til July but you can bet as soon as July 11th comes around I will be getting one.

I have to laugh at your comments, because they take in assumption that "we" choose to program apps and upload those directly to our phones. The majority of "us" have zero interest and desire to do such a thing. The real value in this kind of functionally it that software programers can create apps and directly market them to people. The bad thing about this is there is no QC for that kind of code and it's likely that lots of peoples phone could be hosed because of crappy code and who will support those phones with all the crap on them???? I wouldn't think the service provider would, unless it's for a fee.

Seems we average peeps are happy getting our stuff from Apple or Microsoft.

It really wasn't broken, so it didn't "need" to be fixed now did it?

Waiting to hear why the Droid is any better still

I like having an open market. Half my app's on my G1 (HTC Dream - Android) are not from the market.

My Facebook app (FBook) is the best FB app for the android, and it's not available in the market.

I love the Android platform. :goodvibes

Ohh man I really want one, but my contract isnt up till the summer.
But I do have a question, what do you have to do to be eligable for a upgrade without having to wait for your contract to be up (if u can even do that)

The first and most important criteria of any device I purchase is openness. It doesn't have to be open source, though that is a plus, but I want full control of anything I own. The Apple model doesn't do that and since that is the most important thing to me that means I stop considering it right then and there. They decide what goes into the App store and what doesn't. I want to choose for myself what I want. If I want a Google Voice app that "duplicates the function of my phone" I will buy it, full stop.

The market will vette applications just like they do in the PC world. A smart phone is just a small computer that can make calls. If someone writes a program that bricks phones it will be known pretty quickly in the tech community. Either I won't buy it or I will brick my phone and restore it. No big deal. I've had to rebuild computers and servers that had bad code installed on them, I'll just do the same for my phone.

Android still has a store so anyone not adventurous enough to go out and test apps themselves can get the "approved" ones. I want full, unadulterated control of my device without having to jail break my phone. I"m more than willing to take the bad with the good.

Am I the only one who finds some of this stuff just a little bit creepy?:confused3 LOL!

Well we bought 2 Driods on Friday & both have stopped working. I have charged them & nothing...mine just won't go on at all..DH's just keeps shutting off. I am taking them back today to get new ones..hopefully they will work...I did like the phone but I need reliabilty more than anything. My kids school needs to be able to reach me & I can't have my phone shutting off here & there...:headache:

LOL Our Garmin shows a picture of our house when we get home.....

I know, but still, it's a little creepy. I mean, how does a phone scan a bar code, or tell if a surface is level etc.... I want one but it's a little weird. LOL!

Don't think of it as a phone, think of it as a really small computer. Because really, that's what the Droid is. The iPhone too, for that matter. The little flip phones are still just phones, but the smart phones have all the power and abilities of little computers. With the camera, accelerometer, and GPS the Droid will be able to do all sorts of things that most phones can't do.

I got an EnV Touch last week and even though I'm pleased with it I am strongly considering switching to the Droid. Even though I'm not adventurous enough to just try a random, untested app, I'm really excited about the open market. I follow several tech sites and blogs and I trust their reviews of the different apps. I love that if I get the Droid I'll be able to customize it so extensively. (Now if someone can manage to get it to save apps to the SD card I'll be really happy.)

I am sticking with my iphone. I still have an original iphone. I was in the apple store last weekend to buy a new cover. (I am on my 3rd cover) The guy there was just shocked that I didn't want to upgrade. For one thing, I don't want to pay for the more expensive data plan. Another reason is that I don't think that the newer versions offer anything that I want that I don't already have.

I feel the same way about the Droid. I love my iphone and am perfectly content. I am sure that the Droid is really cool but I am happy with what I have.

Besides, I can't switch because all of my friends and family use AT&T. It would cost me a fortune in minutes!:rotfl:

There hasn't been a phone released that actually competed with the iPhone until now. You may not hear "My iPhone is just as good" for a little while, but im sure you will hear "I wish my iPhone did that" more often now. I have heard it from the iPhone users who have tinkered with my Droid already.

With that being said, I couldn't live without my iPod Touch. I get a new one every September when they are released, I have always been a fan of Apple. Until Google Marketplace catches up to the app store I will continue carrying my iPod Touch around. And with Google doing everything open source, it shouldn't take long for that to happen. :thumbsup2
