I am shopping for an adjustable bed for my Mother where the head and the feet/legs can be raised, but the legs can be raised even if the head is down flat.

My Mom is recovering in from a terrible car accident (has just gone home after being hospitalized 5 months) and she deals with alot of feet/leg swelling at times. It seems that many of the adjustable beds are set so that if the feet is elevated the head must also be elevated. But my Mom often needs to sleep (laying flat) with her legs slightly elevated. At this time she doesn't have enough strength in her legs to prop them under pillows because she can't lift her legs up off the bed very far.

From online product descriptions it's often difficult to tell whether or not the foot of the bed can be raised independently.

Do you own one and can tell me which bed it is and how yours works? Recommendations?

We saved some money by using pillows and then firm foam cushions.

You mean you stuffed the pillows/cushions under the fitted sheet? I still don't think we could make it as high as needed because she wouldn't be able to lift he leg onto it if it's more than 2 or 3 inches high, but this could be a "half way" solution until we find a bed!

Contact your local Visiting Nurses or Medical equipment supplier, they can help you find just the model that you need, and they will be able to arrange the rental, delivery and set up. That's how my Grandmother and Dad each got one temporarily at different times when they needed one.

When I was pregnant, I had to be in trandelenburg position (hips raised above head) for months. Barrel of laughs, but that's a whole other story. The bed elevated my whole lower body and lowered the head....sleeping on a slant really. But, you could definitely raise the feet and keep head level. We rented a hospital bed from a medical company (reasonable compared to purchase price, especially if you are not thinking this is going to be "years" long event). We bought out own memory foam topper for it, and it was pretty comfortable. The company brought it out and set it up in our home, all included in the cost of rental.

I recommend putting the pillows above the sheets, but under the legs. Instead of one thick pillow/cushion... get thin ones so can elevate higher or lower as necessary.

Your local foam shops can custom cut you a foam piece for the exact height and dimensions as necessary. I ask for the "densest" foam. A raw piece of dense foam is very affordable. It's when you ask them to put it inside a cover that cost a lot.

Foam shops can also create "medical foam" where you can get some ergonomic shapes.

We have an adjustable bed. We ordered it online from Deal Beds. We went to multiple stores before making the purchase and every single one that we tried out allowed you to adjust just the head, just the foot, or both.

Check on craigslist. They're listed there often. We have an comfort adjustable frame bed and LOVE

Shouldn't this be covered under her insurance? I would contact my local medical supply company and let them help you.

We have an adjustable bed. Actually, it's two XL twins pushed together, which makes it slightly wider than a king, but the same length as a California king We bought XL twin foam mattress toppers and the beds are very comfortable. Each bed has its own remote, and the head and/or foot of the beds can be adjusted individually. i.e. head up, feet down, or feet up and head down, or both head and feet up ("V" shaped), or both flat.

The sheets are slightly more expensive for the beds we have, but having two twins allows us each to set the bed the way we want it, and believe it or not, it's easier to change the sheets when the level of the mattress is adjustable.

We bought them at MattressOne, and the staff was very helpful. Our insurance did not cover the cost, unfortunately.

I would look into renting a hospital bed. If she will be spending a lot of time in bed, you can get a special air flow bed that helps prevent skin breakdown. And insurance may help pay for it

Hospital beds suck!!!! If you are looking for something very comfortable I would spend the money and buy a Tempurpedic Bed. The have different grades. Mine is a cadillac with head/feet up down and 3 massages. She would not need this one,but they are amazing. The memory foam on my is 3-4 inches thick and just mold to the body. I have had mine for 4 years and it looks like it has never been slept in. Do not go cheap at all.

I have one from Denver Mattress and it does let you independently control the head and foot of the bed.

Check with your local Masons organization.
Search Amazon for a Leg Lifter, and use pillows or a special wedge.
