Hello fellow Disney fanatics!
We are cruising on the November 2nd Magic (and we're from OHIO and not New Jersey - can you believe it?). Last year, we went on a 3 day and I was a bit sea sick.

I'm familiar with Dramamine, but are they are any other medications that can be recommended? I've heard about a patch that can be prescribed by the doctor which I've heard is effective, but wasn't sure if there were other options. I'm not interested in the wrist band, as I've heard mixed things about that.

Any suggestions would be appreciated!

I can't wait for that cruise atmosphere and the chance to forget the rest of the world exists!

I have motion sickness, and took the following steps on our disney cruise last year and was fine.

*avoid fried foods - the healthier the better
*get lots of fresh air
*if feeling ill, drink coke to settle your stomach
*as for medication I was on the Transderm V patch. I was able to purchase it at the local drug store without a prescription. I'm not sure what is required in the States, but I'm sure the phamasist can guide you. The patch works really well, well worth you efforts to get it.

Have a great time!!

PS. Chocolate can make you motion sickness also!

We use bonine too...seems to work better for us than Dramamine. We never got even the least bit sick on the Disney cruise but on an Alaskan cruise our head waiter recommended cheese and crackers to settle the stomach and it worked well.

Hi! We are also on the November 2 cruise. This is our first cruise and my husband is prone to motion sickness. He has the Transderm Scop, prescribed by our doctor. It cannot be purchased over the counter in New Jersey. It was easy to get. I have heard that it works well.

I am worried about my son who has gotten car sick in the past. I have the sea bands for him and regular dramamine as that is what his pediatrician recommended.

I have sea bands for myself and bonine if that doesn't work. I am hoping that if I am really prepared, we will have calm seas and not need any of it!!

The Transderm-V patch in Canada and the Transderm Scop patch in the US are the same thing -- a circular patch the you wear behind the ear, manufactured by Novartis Pharmaceutical, and containing scopolamine to combat nausea and vomiting. Each patch lasts 3 days.

Transderm Scop requires a doctor's prescription in the US.

Some people on this board have reported unpleasant side effects. I've found that it works very well. You completely forget about it.

For more information about scopolamine, see http://www.mdadvice.com/library/drug/drug383.html

We used Bonine and it worked great. We actually had filled a perscription for the transderm patch but when I read all the side effects in the pamphlet that came with it I said forget it! I have tried seabands numerous times in the past and they have never worked but I figured I would give them a try on my mom this time and unfortunatly they didn't work for her either....

My husband is also prone to motion sickness. I got his prscription filled the other day for transderm. scop, said he wouldn't go without it. He used it on out last cruise years ago and felt just fine, maybe a little tired here and there but he felt it was well worth it.

On our last cruise three of our girls were much younger and VERY prone to car sickness, never had a problem didn't even have to use Dramanime. No one ever got sick except for me on the last night coming into Miami. :(

Though I've never gotten sea sick, when I feel ill, drinking ginger ale calms my stomach nicely. I've heard ginger tablets, ginger ale, and other forms of ginger are also good for sea sickness. DH-to-be has only been seasick once and is looking into options just incase. Good thread!

Hola,

:p Ginger capsules work very well. I have taken for cruise before. You can get it at any drug store, supermarket or WalMart. We were ok on ship while others were sick, even after they took whatever the ship doc gave out.

:smooth:

I have major motion sickness. Only thing that seems to work for me are the orange chewable Dramamine. They do make me a little drowsy but I deal with it personally cause its better than needing to curl up at the toilet. I take one when I wake up and don't get out of bed until it's started to work. (Unless in a port then I leave it until closer to sail away).

Hi! I highly recommend meclazine. Doesn't make you tired. You can get it from the pharmacy. Another name is bonine. We take it whether we need it or not.
Ditto. It doesn’t make you drowsy like Dramamine can. The generic meclazine is very inexpensive. If you get industrial-strength motion sickness I’ve heard really good things about the patch.
