I might get more response from a cruise line forum, but I'll try here - something has happened I've gotten horrible terrible, extreme motion sickness in just the last year (I blame it on hormones!!) I LOVE Rollercoasters... but lately I'm even getting sick driving the darn car!! So I was going to see about the patch for motion sickness... :3dglasses

but I'm going at the same time as Food and Wine Festival... what reactions would one have mixing this medication with alcohol?? (not a lot, just a glass?) or should I just stick with the bomine, and skip it that day... OK I know y'all arent going to give me medical advice, I just was curious if anyone used the patch and had a glass of wine with dinner, or is that strictly forbodden??? :confused3

I've never used the patch, but have in the past when I've been on boats used the wrist bands and dramamine and did drink alcohol with no reaction. Don't know what medicine is in a patch.

P.S. I know that my motion sickness gets worse if my sinuses are stuffed and recently I felt a little sick on some rollercoasters which I love and use to be the only ride I could go on. But I think part of the problem there is that a lot of the new coasters have loads of loops and twists and corkscrews and are just too much for me. :sad2:

Now my DD gets car sick a lot but has no problem going on something like the mad teacups which I get nausous (sp?) just watching.

Though I'm no pharmacist, I have used the patch several times before BOTH for cruises and WDW visits. It is called a scopalamine patch and I usually ask my OBGYN for a supply during my yearly pap. The only side effect I experience is a bit of a dry mouth. I have had an alcoholic drink and had no problems. I think it magnifies the effect of the alcohol, IMO. :crazy2:

I know the patch works well for motion sickness, but seems a bit extreme for roller coaster riding. You will also need to apply the patch about an 1 hour or so before riding. DW used the wrist bands on our last cruise and does in the car (has started getting car sick over the past year) and gets good results.

HTH

I've used it before, but I don't think I actually drank any alcohol while wearing it. It causes me extreme dry mouth to the point that I wonder what is worse, the car sickness or the dry mouth.

I just went to my Dr's yesterday to ask about motion sickeness before our upcoming trip. She gave me a 'script for the scopamine patch and also told me to get some bracelet for motion sickness.

The bracelet is (obviously) non medication, and is over the counter. She said that you put some sort of gel on your wrist and that it has dials on it and you can "dial up" if you're feeling more sick, and turn it down if you're feeling OK. She also said that a fellow Dr. with major motion sickness problems in the office took it on a cruise and it worked great. She said it will cost me about $50

With the patch, I specifically asked the alcohol question. (Hey - my DH and I postponed out honeymoon 3 months so we could go to the Food and Wine Festival :) ). She told me that if I had "1-2 drinks per day, that I should have no problem wearing the patch"

I'm going to go get both and I'm thinking about taking them on a boating test run to see if one works better than the other before we go on the trip.

I used the patch a couple of years ago on a cruise. I had a couple of drinks a night without any problems.

My husband has one of the wristbands. It looks like a watch, and it emits a small electric shock to your wrist. You use it with a special gel to improve the connectivity. I can't remember what it is called, but I know we ordered it online from a boating website, possibly for Westmarine. It works really well for him.

The thing that works best for me is Less drowsy dramamine. It has to be in your system before going on any rides, so I take it the night before we leave for WDW. I also take it at night because it works for 24 hours and by taking it at night you will sleep off the drowsiness (if any) and you will not get sick. This stuff really really works. I have used it for cruises and theme parks. I no longer get dizzy, sick to my stomach or headachey. You can buy it in the drugstore and it is the same stuff as if you got a prescription from the doctor for motion sickness pills. Also there are absolutely no side effects..no dry mouth and you can drink all you want. After a 7 day cruise I was able to ride mission space 3 times without a problem

some popple swear by the patch, some have bad side effects like blurred vision and rapid heart beat.

I just stick with what works for me. It's inexpensive and works wonders...i no longer have to close my eyes and I no longer get that "flippy" feeling in my stomach. If you are going to take dramamine, make sure you get the Less drowsy formula. I have also tried Bonine, but they are chewable and are gross and it does not come in a less drowsy formula. I did not like Bonine as much.

Also what works for a queazy stomach from motion sickness is ginger tablets. you can buy them in a vitiman store. The only thing with these is you have to take them iwth a lot of water and with food. If you take them on an empty stomach, it will be like you are burping ginger cookies all day.

I've used the patch for a cruise. I had extreme dry mouth and blurred vision from the patch. As I remember it is worn for three days and the side effects lessen over the three days. I'd vote for less drowsy dramamine!

I wore the patch for the Disney Cruise. It worked well. I still had a second one on when we got to MK. It did not work for me on Space Mt. So gentle rocking, yes. Jerking back and forth, side to side, no.

The patch is AWESOME! I use it SOLELY for riding thrill rides. I asked my doc for a script for something for motion sickness specifically for riding rides at WDW and he gave me the Transdermal Sop patch (scopolamine). It was a miracle! I tried it at our local amusement park a few days later and I rode everything without a problem for the first time in 10 years!

The patch gets applied behind your ear and lasts for 3 days. You apply it the night before the activity you plan on doin. It can cause dry mouth (which I never got) and blurred vision IF you touch your eyes after handling the patch. Wash your hands thoroughly after applying the patch and after removing it. DO NOT touch or fiddle with the patch while wearing it (wash your hands if you do).

A drink or two a day should be ok on the patch. It may magnify the effects of the alcohol.

If you do, let me know!! :goodvibes

I have always had great results with Bonine and Ginger tablets - until this year!! Went to 6 Flags, and only did a water ride - and went down a water slide, both I got so sick I had to sit for almost an hour... and years ago went on Star Tours with no problems using the bonine and ginger aides!! However, last year I didnt do any roller coasters, did the bonine and ginger, and did Star Tours, I know the tricks, sit on the end, tell your eyes where to look, know the floor is not moving, just the seat... and again, I got so sick,

I just dont want to sit out on everything, IF a patch is available to help!!

So thank you all so much for your insights, and what works!! I'll keep my water take up - and try it for 3 days!! The doctor gave me a script for 4 patches, 1 box and it was $35.

Dramamine, even the less drowsy formula, makes me very, very sleeepy.

Bought the Acu-Strap Sickness Band - useless.

Haven't tried ?Bomine? not sure if that's the name - anyone know?

As for the patch, is there a maximum number of days you can wear it consecutively?

Wonder if I could get it for my son, who will be 12-1/2 @ the time?

Before my hysterectomy, I could ride anything...now I get nauseous on planes, spinging rides, etc. Do think it could be hormonal or by product of advancing age :earsboy: .

Here's another vote for Bonine (meclazine) that's the less-drowsy form of dramamine. On a recent Caribbean cruise, we had the patch for my seasick susceptible daughter. She did fine for the first 3 days (you need to re-apply the patch after 3 days), but when she put the 2nd one on she had horrible trouble with blurry vision. It was bad enough that she couldn't even read the menus in the dining rooms, which were in fairly large print.

After about 36 hours, we took it off, and just had her use meclazine. She tolerated that much better. I'd suggest starting off with the meclazine, and if it doesn't work for you, then try the patch as a last resort.

There is a trick for taking less drowsy dramamine. I read it makes you very sleepy. A woman told me a few years back to take it before going to bed. Since 1 dose works for 24 hours, you will sleep off the "drowsy" part, so you wake up with a good nights sleep and feel refreshed and motion sick free.

I can't tolerate taking Bonine...I have only seen it in a chewable form and it is soooo gross tasting. Yuck! I just found taking 2 dramamine before bed starting the night before arrival works. Maybe this tip will help others too.....just passing it on :sunny:

Also I never got motion sick UNTIL I reached my 40's....there must be something to it.

I never saw/heard of these kind. Ones I use have metal ball that is placed on your pulse point. That's it. Just uses pressure.

If you wear the patch for longer than 7 days then apparently you CAN suffer from a withdrawal period. The pharamacist told me I could wear one patch for my whole 7 day trip instead of switching to a new one after 3 days.

AHA!! Its those gosh darn hormones ruining my love of roller coasters!! I wont have it I tell ya!! :rotfl:

For the Bonine - yes you can get it in swallow form.

For the "less Drowsy" dramamine - check the ingredients, compare it to the regular formula, someone on these boards found out the less drowsy is just 1/2 dose of the regular formulation!!

So now maybe I need to increase my intake of estrogen!!

I also read be careful with washing your hands after touching the patch, as well as dont talke it longer than 7 days... Just love the boards and all the useful information on here!!
