Hello everyone !

Next july I am going to US / IOA for the first time. One of my friend told me that these parks were essentially thrill rides and simulator ride. Is that right ?

As per the thread title, you can understant that I am affraid about motion sickness and I am wondering what exactly I will be able to do in these parks...

I know that everybody is different, so I will give some information about what I can and Can't do at WDW :

Soarin, ToT, Space and splash montain, BTM : I love those rides...
Honey I shrunk... : not my favorite ride, but I can do this attraction...

BUT ...

Aerosmith : to much looping
Star Tours :
Mad tea Party : I can't do anything doing an "itself turn"

So any idea or advice ?

I was told to avoid Simpsons'...

Many thanks in advance !!!

Unless you're a big Harry Potter fan, you may want to avoid that one. It's the only ride that's ever made me sick...and a lot of others according to these boards. Spiderman has a lot of jerking and moving...you're also wearing 3D glasses for that one which might make you sick.

The Simpsons you should for sure avoid though. It's very jerky and bumpy.

I do ride Aerosmith even though it makes me feel weird. I do not ride Star Tours as it makes me feel sick and I can't get near the tea cups. YUCK! Whatever you do, DO NOT attempt Simpsons. OMG I was so sick. NEVER again.

In your case...
SKIP: The Simpsons Ride, Storm Force Accelatron (faster/more intense teacups), Hulk coaster (7 inversions), Dragon Challenge (5 inversions on each coaster)

MAYBES: Shrek 4-D, Spider-Man, Hollywood Rip Ride Rockit (has no inversions), Cat in the Hat, Jimmy Neutron (has stationary seating), T2:3D, Popeye & Blutos (white water rapids; similar to Kali, but wetter)

YOU'D PROBABLY LIKE: Revenge of the Mummy (indoor coaster; more intense than Space Mtn, less intense than Everest), Harry Potter & the Forbidden Journey (Soarin + Haunted Mansion, but more intense), Jurassic Park River Adventure (bigger drop than Splash), Jaws, Ripsaw Falls (similar to Splash Mtn, but wetter and a bigger drop), Doctor Doom's Fear Fall, ET

Be sure to check youtube and search for onride/first person ride videos. Also check universalorlando.com for even more info on the rides! :goodvibes

Dark Marauder, excellent summary! :thumbsup2

I would only add, for any 3D ride you can generally take off the glasses and close your eyes or look down or away, and the queasiness is not too bad. After the first couple of times on Simpsons and Spiderman I did that and felt more comfortable. Simpson's isn't 3D, but I just looked to the side and watched the people in the other cars, which is an attraction all by itself.

Also, Men in Black has some really quick spinning toward the end of the ride, it didn't make me as queasy as the 3D rides but you should be aware.

Mummy didn't make me queasy at all, but at one point soon after it accelerates off into the dark, it has a sudden whiplash turn. It gave me a crick in the neck the first few times but then I learned to get ready for it (I can't remember the strategy but I think I braced my head hard against the headrest). I gather that the Hollywood version has a similar whiplash effect, because the Father in Law told me he lost his false teeth last summer when he rode it. What with the andrenaline pumping, etc., he didn't even realize he lost his teeth until the TM pointed them out, sitting on the seat when he stood up to exit. :rotfl2:

Someone told me a strategy for not getting motion sickness on inverting coasters. I haven't tried this myself but I thought I'd mention it. He said you should try to remember to keep breathing steadily throughout the ride, especially the inversions. Supposedly, tensing up and holding your breath is harder on your inner ear. He claimed that this technique is taught to fighter pilots for when they're pulling high Gs. I can see how this would help prevent blacking out but I'm not sure if it also helps for nausea.

Thank you so much !!!

It will helps a lot. I will definitively follow your advice regarding the nausea and skip a few rides.

And what about Twister ? Should Iskip this one too ? Is that any rotation in this ride ? I must admit that the name scrared me a bit ...

This isn't a ride but more of an attraction.

I'm very similar to the original poster in what makes me queasy and what doesn't according to that ride list. If you decide to ride the Simpsons (which I can do once without problems), try to get a front seat. You can't see the other cars from the back and the air doesn't circulate as well in the back.

I love Spiderman, Mummy, MIB and Shrek by the way. Really, the only rides I have problems with are Storm Acceleration which I can ride only if everyone agrees not to spin it, and Jimmy Neutron, bleh , you may want to go for the stationary seat on that one. I avoid looping roller coasters too.

Oh, and I also saw a program that said the trick is to keep breathing (no tensing up or holding your breath, as the above poster said) but make sure to breathe faster or slower than the rhythm of the ride you are on. We have a tendency to breath in rhythm of the movement we are experiencing which is not good thing.

@damo

I just wanted to say.. that picture your sig is GREAT. Did you draw that yourself? Looks exactly like my dog.:hippie:

I asked this on another thread but realized this probably is a better place for it.
This will be our third time going to US/IOA..our first to WWOHP. It's in regards to FJ and if I can do it :confused3
Normally I do everything, with the exception of the Hulk, Dr. Dooms Fearfall, Dualing Dragons and RRR. Last time I tried Ripsaw Falls though... anything with a BIG drop kinda bothers me...but I just turn my head and close my eyes..:rotfl:
I particularly love The Simpsons, Spiderman, Shrek 3D, Jimmy Neutron..any type of simulator ride. For me I think it's the "less threat of dying" fear I have vs the BIG COASTERS..the size of them is what scares the :scared1: out of me!
So for the experts..am I candidate for FJ??

Ya, no problem. There are no drops whatsoever. It isn't a coaster.

The only "rotation" is the show effects. You're just standing, watching a special effects show. The floor "drops" at the end.

I get motion sickness as well and avoid the same Disney rides you mentioned. We went to Universal in August and I was determined to ride Harry Potter, but was concerned w/ feeling sick. I took Bonine. One every morning and one again in the evening (before we went back to the parks) and I was definitely able to enjoy that ride.

Bonine didn't completely clear me of any sensitivity, but I certainly felt a lot better on certain rides than I have in the past (i.e. Men in Black). Normally I can only ride Men in Black once, but this time I was able to go on multiple times (ditto w/ Mummy).

However, even with Bonine, I'd recommend you skip Simpsons and consider skipping Spiderman as well (however, both are cool and if you want to go on and test it out, you can always just close your eyes if it starts to be too much).
