Most annoying vocabulary blunders

Now I did post a picture on another web site and "someone" told me I looked like I had just walked out of a saloon, I think she meant salon, but it's kind of hard to tell with her

It used to drive me crazy when my boss (an attorney and partner in the firm, no less) said "supposively" or "supposably" instead of "supposedly".

What really annoys me is when people use an incorrect spelling of a word to save space. My teenager is horribly guilty of doing that in her written conversations with friends. Examples: "cuz" rather than "because" or the number "2" rather than "too" or "to"...

They also seem to ignore basic sentence structure and capitalization rules. That drives me insane.

Last week, in my 7th grade class I told them to write about a favorite birthday. I told them to especially watch out for Spelling errors this time.

Well, one girl handed in a nice long writing piece all about her "b-day" !

I had to break up with a really good-looking boyfriend some years ago, because he kept saying "flustrating." He had questionable morals too, but the making up word hybrid thing really got to me. I guess some of us are spelling and vocabulary snobs!

My DH calls my best friend and I "The Grammar Police". We both went to Catholic school, too....different ones in the same city. We can't go anywhere without correcting a sign or something else. We're not mean, but we'll mention the sign isn't correct to each other. I saw a sign for a bank that said, "We'll get to know you too." There should be a comma between you and too. I saw another sign advertising an event for "March, 12." No comma after March. I got a CD from a band that plays at a lounge my mother and I like and one of the songs was "Your the one that I want." Not you're, but your. People make mistakes, but when you're making a billboard or a sign or some other advertisement, get it proof-read.

I also hate when people end sentences in prepositions. "Where are you at?" We were watching Cops and one cop was asking a suspect, "Where's the gun at? Are you taking me somewhere that the gun's at?"

Conjugating verbs incorrectly....shooken up....we was over there....I brung it yesterday....etc. It doesn't really bother me, exactly, but it does stand out and tends to distract me.

For me, I don't mind bad blunders on the any chat board. It makes me insane when people use the word "aint", I just want to cringe. I understand it is a regional thing. I grew up in the Chicago area, and I have never used the word aint. In turn, my kids do not say the word aint. Most of their friends say it, and it makes me cringe. I asked my daughters first grade teacher about it. I asked her if kids say it in class. She said a couple of them do, but she corrects them.

What I 'like' best are the various ways to spell 'definitely' here on the boards. Also annoying is the mixing up of 'there', 'they're', and 'their'.
And eventually a very Disney, but very common mistake: 'Dalmations' instead of Dalmatians'

I try to make sure I am using the correct spelling and grammar before I post anything. I realize that people are in a hurry when they are posting, and I will give them the benefit of the doubt when I come across any errors.

I can't stand "prolly". It isn't a blunder but I just think it sounds so trailer trash. LOL!

My opinion (and please remember that we are all entitled to our opinions) is that threads like these are belittling and have the potential to cause hurt feelings. The last time I gave my opinion on this matter I was told "not to get my panties in a bunch" so I took them off. I am now going "commando".

That's the one that I catch.

Generally, these things don't bug me on the internet. I can't spell, and my grammar isn't always perfect. So I won't say anything to anyone else. But in a professional setting? Doesn't look good.

What bothers me is that I do not have permission to edit people's posts. I want so bad to go in and correct those errors when I see them, but they just sit there and stare me in the face. Now, I DO wonder why the people who posted the error don't go back and correct it. They do have permission.

I wonder about that too. Why don't they go back and correct their mistakes?

Irregardless is annoying. Maybe Websters will make it a word since its used so often. Mistakes on the boards don't bother me.

If you look in Webster's, you'll find that sometimes a word will be so misused and commonplace, that it ends up being accepted. I remember my Linguistics professor saying that there is prescriptive grammar, (what we should say), and descriptive grammar, (what is commonly used.) His point was that both are acceptable, but I still can't grasp that concept!

One thing I can't stand is when people refer to being pregnant as "preggers" or "preggo". It's done on purpose, so not really a blunder, but it drives me nuts!

I know my grammar and spelling very well, but will sometimes type something wrong unintentionally. My biggest thing seems to be typing "know" instead of "now". I have no idea why I do that, but I do. I correct my posts if I notice I made an error, but I am sure I have tons of them out there that aren't perfect.

That being said, it doesn't bother me when other people do it either, we all make mistakes. I wouldn't be surprised if I made one in this post.

I thought I was the only one guilty of this! I even say know, now, and known to try and figure it out, lol!

Oh yes, I agree with the other posters who have a problem with "irregardless" and words like "preggers".

My personal irritant is "flustrated" It is either "flustered" or "frustrated". Those are your choices I might get grief from other Dis members over this, but it bugs me to see "ressies" It sounds, to me, similar to preggers, in that alternate cutesy endings are added to a word. What is wrong with just writing out reservations (only 4 more letters than the alternative) or res or resv.

I work in the public schools and it is hard to listen to people who are *supposedly* (I used it correctly ) educated and use words like "birfday" and "libery".
