Moss rose

When I was a kid in the midwest we had moss rose that came up year after year. It spread quickly and grew in very thick. Has anyone found a variety that does this in the south? It is considered an annual here. I love these little flowers but have not been able to get them to come back.

Wayside Gardens has a great rose catalog which in the past has had some moss rose bushes in it. They are located in the south and I'm sure they can be of help to you.

I've ordered rose bushes from them and the stock has been reliable and healthy upon arrival. I took a quick look for moss roses (I do have one from them) but haven't located one on the website. Hopefully you'll be able to find one.

To my mind, moss rose is portulaca - an annual that reseeds every year. They are low growing and multi-colored - although you can now get them in single colors. They close up in the dark, but there is a new, much more expensive variety that stays open at night. I love them. I have started three flats of them and I know they will reseed. Barbara

That is exactly what they are. In Indiana they came back year after year. In Georgia they do not.

Oh, I'm sorry. There is an old shrub rose called a moss rose. Its stems are almost gluey - it's the only way I can explain them.

I guess I was way off base on this one! So sorry!


Our portulaca are treated like annuals here in Jersey! I'd be interested in a perennial form if there is one around!

No problem Gina. I called as asked my Dad whether my stepmom used to replant, he said no she didn't replant and had to have a border around them since they used to get into the yard. Unfortunately she passed away about 10 years ago so I can't confirm.
