More waitlist ponderings...

So does anyone know why guides will tell you that you are 66th on the waitlist for points at a certain resort, yet MS won't make it easy for CMs to tell you how far down the waitlist you are for a ressie?

I'd think this would not be a difficult computer program to initiate. If I knew I'd be 5th on a waitlist for a standard view studio in early December, I'd probably feel confident my waitlist would come thru. If they told me I was 55th, then maybe I wouldn't even bother.

Maybe other people wouldn't bother waitlisting if they knew where on the list they stood. At least you could make a decision as to whether or not you wanted to put your resort plans in limbo by knowing where you might be on a waitlist.

I suppose I am the only one who thinks this, but I am a numbers person. Not even knowing where I am on a waitlist bugs me.

The dynamics of the waitlist are such that it's likely difficult to answer where you are on the list.

If you are waitlisted for June 15-20 and tomorrow someone else joins the list for June 14-17- but they use the auto-list - they may actually be higher than you for June 15,16 or 17 since they have indicated that they'll automatically accept the dates as they become available. You will only get the dates if June 15-20 becomes available all at once (individual dates are NOT saved to fill a waitlist request).

The position on the waitlist is not as important as how you are waitlisted. Some dates are a lot more active. There is no harm going on the list- regardless how long the list may be.

Doc, in this example, do you mean to say an auto-confirm waitlist gets higher priority than a waitlist where they call you before confirming the night?

or did you just mean if someone does a day-by-day waitlist vs. a waitlist waiting for the entire stay?

you can do a day-by-day waitlist w/o auto-confirm, right?
i.e. have MS call you as each separate night becomes available?
please tell me this is so, because that is what i hoped to do.

we are waitlisted for the first night of our trip for BWV standard view. They booked us for the preferred view for that night and said they would automatically change us if it became available. This is the first time we had to waitlist. Does this sound right? Or should I be changing how I'm waitlisted? We booked a two bedroom 10 months out--What are our chances?

I think Doc's reminding everyone that there are several ways to wait list. One can ask to be called or auto-confirmed. One can also list each day separately or for the entire thing at once. If one asks for 15-20 June as a single block but only 16-20 comes available, you will not get it unless the 15th also comes available before someone else wants those days. Wait listing can be a dicey proposition. If you wait list day by day, you many only get one day in the middle and possibly have to change resorts twice.

The best way to wait list is to have an existing reservation made at the 11 month window. Then add in the extra days at the desired resort at the 7 month window. If some days aren't available, wait list them day by day and autoconfirm. Once you get everything you can then cancel the old backup reservation. If you get to the 30 day window, you must make a choice of how to proceed since any unused points from that point will be in restricted. This also means one must have a use year compatible with the plans to allow banking of any points freed up at the end once you start cancelling what you don't need.
