I just saw this online- I was almost 4 months pregnant this time last year and you wouldn't see me ice skating! According to the tabloids, they say she is almost 6 months along. What if she fell? Isn't that dangerous? :confused3

(I'm sorry I don't know how to post a link but it is part of aol's entertainment section so I'll just quote from the article)

"But the night wasn't over. Despite some nasty rain with some sleet thrown in, Tom and Katie took to Central Park's Wollman Rink (the same one that King Kong and Naomi Watts use onscreen in the new movie epic) and skated, in between hugging and kissing.

They remained on the ice for about half an hour, after which Katie took refuge inside while Tom continued to skate a little longer. "

I do not ice skate, but I would think that at 6 mos along, it would be rather difficult to stay on your skates. :confused3 And you'd probably risk going into premature labor if you fell just right. :earseek:

This only points to Tom being more of a nutjob than was previously thought.

well, she probably shouldn't be attempting the triple axel.

:rotfl2:

no seriously - it isn't that big of a deal if she does it somewhat sedately, especially if she is experienced. You see pregnant women skiing all the time.

You know I completely forgot about not being able to balance- I was waddling by 4 months! I'd never have been able to stay upright. What were they thinking?

I was just thinking how I hadn't heard much about them lately. It was a nice feeling. I could care less when or if she ice skates, or enters into a roller derby, for that matter.

I think this is over-reacting. She can skate if she wants - I bet she's not going to gain the 40 lbs I did when I was pregnant! And if she does fall, it will most likely be her butt that suffers, not her baby!

:teeth:

40 lbs?!?!?!? Wow.

I bet Katie..I'm sorry. I forgot..KATE. I bet KATE doesn't gain more than 10 or 15 lbs, the way a lot of women are doing these days so they don't have to work off as much post-baby weight.

What's so Wow, about 40lbs? An average sized women should gain between 20 and 35 pounds.

I gained 50- I have about 6 left to go. I'll wait til after the holidays for that! I was supposed to have gained 35 but I had a great pregnancy and a very healthy (almost) 9 pounder.

I'd be happy if I only gained 40!

I don't see the big deal, why can't she ice skate? I wouldn't advise speed skating, ice hockey or as someone else said triple axels, but if she is of any competence on the ice then gliding along shouldn't be any problem.

No wonder you were waddling at only 4 months! :teeth:

My former boss had a mantra, "only 20 lbs is baby." She'd say it over and over again. I guess I wanted twins! :rotfl2:

Well I think it would depend on how much she had skated before she was pregnant. I certainly wouldn't advise taking up ice skating during pregnancy, but if she was an experienced skater, the exertion and balance issues wouldn't be new to her.

I remember seeing a Dorothy Hamill Christmas special in which a visibly pregnant Dorothy skated and even did a few half-jumps. (with her drs. permission, according to the announcer!)

That's the problem ... they weren't thinking!

I could see if she were Nancy Kerrigan who has vast experience ice skating ... yet would still think it risky. But me thinks Katie is no Nancy Kerrigan!

I guess I am crazy too! I went ice skating in September (around 18 weeks) and again end of November (26 weeks).

At 18 weeks I could skate pretty well and didn't worry much at all. I was on the ice for 2 hours and it was a lot of fun. I mean I was hardly showing and I went slow.

At 26 weeks well that was tougher because of my belly size. I only went on the ice because it was my DD's b-day party. I really didn't do much skating but I did stay on the ice for most of the time, and it was a lot harder than before. Just getting my laces tied was the biggest challenge though. I wont be skating again though, at 26 weeks it was too tough due to my size.

I guess I don't see a problem with it if she has skated before and she wasn't doing anything nuts. For someone that has skated before keeping balance and gliding around slow isn't difficult at all.

If shes done it before she will be fine. I dont think she will be doing any jumps. She could trip and fall on a sidewalk and get hurt also.

According to my doctor when I was pregnant. Anything that you did a lot before you were pregnant you can still do while you are pregnant. Your body is used to it and it won't put any stress on the baby. It would take a really hard fall to hurt the baby so as long as she wasn't over doing it I think it is o.k. I am impressed that she can do it!

At six months, it might even be a little difficult to see your skates! :rotfl2:

That is exactly what my doctor told me. I rode horses up to the day I delivered my twins and they were both 7 pounders. I also went to Disneyland and Knotts Berry Farm when I was 3 months pregnant and rode everything with my doctor's blessings.

I think pregnant women are not as delicate as people make them out to be.

I remember being 7 months pregnant and riding my ATV in the sand dunes in Glamis. I lasted about 20 minutes before me and the baby had enough!
