From the March 1976 Walt Disney World newspaper:

Maybe some of you have heard of the "brand new" water park coming to Fort Wilderness.

OMG This brings back soooo many memories! I had completely forgotten about the newspapers until I saw them. Now I have to go and call my grandmother and get her to tell me more stories about when we were there. I remember a bunch, but she always seems to get more of the cobwebs out of my stinkin head!:lmao:

The first time I went to River Country was over 4th of July weekend in 1976. We made a BIG weekend out of it. Stayed at FtW, drove to KSC for our first tour (cool), and spent one day at River Country. It was an amazing water park, and the first of it's kind!

It's too bad they had to close it, cause it was so convenient for "Forter's" and a wonderful place to relax for the day. I know it's private property, but it should have earned some sort of "historical" priviledge because it was the country's first themed water park.

ETA: The article says the petting zoo would be relocated to the area by the Outpost. I don't ever remember that happening. Does anyone else? I do remember having to rent the rafts. It was like $.75 for the day.

From the March 1976 Disney World Newspaper,

Does anyone remember the old World Cruise? It left from the FW dock. You were give a "Passport" that was green and had a description of all of the places on your cruise. It was an old paddlewheel style boat. I still have my Passport from 1973.

John- Thanks for scanning the old newspapers. I never heard of the world cruises. Or of these old newspapers, for that matter. According to the last article, two steamships were built, and used for this purpose. I wonder where they are now? The article says that the tour included information about the future plans for WDW. That must have been interesting to hear. I note that Trails End was called "Trails End Chuckwagon Buffeteria." That is sure a mouthful!

I remember the Moonlight Cruise, but never took it.

We would simply take the launch from FtW, to the Poly, to the MK, to CR & back to FtW for free!

And YES! It was known as the Buffeteria. I had to show that to my DH because he didn't remember that name! Thanks!

This is GREAT!!

Our first trip to FtW was in October 1974 for our honeymoon. We stayed on the 400 loop. Because of our employment with GTE, we qualified for.........

Hi Des1954,

I'm creating a new book on the old Fort Wilderness Railroad, and looking for memories and photos of the trains by those who visited the Fort back in the 70's.

Your posting is great! I would really like to include it in the book, if possible. Please let me know if you are ok with this, and you will be fully credited for your contribution! :thumbsup2

Thanks.
David

I have many of these newspapers from different trips. (mostly 1975 and 1976) If anyone is interested in something specific, let me know and I'll look for articles concerning your topic.

Hi Disney John!

Great postings! Thanks.

Would you mind looking for articles or references to the FTW Railroad in the 1975 papers?

I would really appreciate it....:worship:

Thanks!
David

All I can think of now is the sad song at the end of the hulk tv show and Bill Bixby walking away with his backpack. I am glad he found something that makes him happy and not turning mean and green!

I don't think that's Bill B. I think that is Lou F. :rotfl:
