Bought niece a Kindle and a Amazon gift card to buy books. We are having difficulty ordering books. I am assuming they want an actual credit card on file.

Is this true? Can't she just use Amazon gift card?

Thank you for your help.

I think you do have to have a card on file. When I set up DD's it went to our Amazon account but I put everything in her name and set a max limit on how much she could purchase at one time. Also when you register your Kindle their should be a place to enter any gift cards, that might work, it's when you set up an Amazon account.

Is it registered under your name? You might want to de-register it, then set up an account for her, and register to that. I think I've seen a few people say they only use gift cards, but I am not sure about that.

I received a Kindle and amazon gift card today. I was able to put the gift card on my Amazon account and order a book, it just deducted the amount of the book from the gift card balance on my account.

There does have to be a credit/debit card on file to use "one click" which is how you buy Kindle books. However if she doesn't have one I have heard of people putting on a Visa reloadable debit card (with a small balance like $5) and then using Gift Cards to make the purchases.

My wife says if you don't have an Amazon account, the paper work says you have to have a credit card on file. The one I got her for Christmas was automatically linked to our Amazon account, which has our credit card number stored on it. So far, all the books she has downloaded are the free public domain books...(anything published before 1923 is a free book, she's a big Jane Austin fan).

Those aren't the only free books Amazon has. They have promotions for free current Kindle eBooks every few days.

Bookmark this link and check it every couple of days. When you see a promo for a free eBook, do NOT wait to get it. The promos usually only last several hours (for mis-priced eBooks) to a couple days, for authors who want to get their books out there. Then the eBooks are back to regular price. You snooze, you lose.

Scroll down a couple pages. Make sure you click on Older Posts. She likes to make a blog post every day. When there are no NEW free eBooks to list that day, she lists some eBook bargains. Some new eBooks came out a couple days ago, and they should still be available for free.

On this website, you can sign up for emails notifying you of new free Kindle books. As Imzadi mentioned, sometimes they're free for a short period of time, so the email gets sent several times a day, so you have the best chance of catching something you want before the $0.00 price is gone.

You can easily pay for the books using a gift card instead of a credit card. Just buy a gift card, apply it to the Amazon account, and it will deduct the cost of the book from that instead of looking for a credit card to charge.
Many people do this to make sure they budget their book expenditures because that one click buying is addictive. Just buy a gift card at the beginning of the month and when it is gone it is gone.

The only problem with not keeping a credit card on file is if you wish to pre-order books. Even if they are free books or even if you have ample gift card balance to cover the cost of the book. If you don't have a credit card number listed, it won't let you pre-order.

I have heard of people putting a nearly zero balance pre-paid debit card (like you get for rebates) in that field in order to be able to pre-order but I've never tried it. I should, we have one from our last cell phone purchase around here somewhere .......

My account is not linked to a credit card, but a savings account with only a small amount in it. It left me add the gift cards and use them without a ptoblem
