More Exchange Student Observations!

This exchange student thing is AWESOME! I wish she was staying longer. Here's some cute quotes from Anna Maria from Austria:

DH asks "Where are you going to college?"
Anna Maria: "In Austria. About a 3 HOUR walk from my home".
DH: "3 HOURS? And you have to WALK?"

And she WILL. She thinks we are totally NUTS. The fact that my DD cracks her toes absolutely freaks her out, and when she found out I do it TOO - she really thought we were over the edge.

They also don't have Halloween in Austria, and all these blow-up Frankensteins and such are tripping her right out.

I place exchange students (area coordinator). And hosted before, too. Our German girl was funny... had some rough times with her, but now we are in contact with each other and looking forward to her visiting us in the future (she left right before dd3 was born).

I LOVED hosting! Our German student really couldn't tell us much about Germany though. The government, etc. She just didn't know how it worked there yet. She would have her mom send stuff from Germany, like chocolate eggs with little toys inside at Easter time.

Oh, and this Italian boy I placed nearby was sooooo sweet! He had so much to share about Sardinia, where he was from.

Enjoy your student for me! My house is outgrown -- couldn't squeeze another person in here if we tried!

She's been studying in French up until now, where she's speaking English. Her first day in American school was today. I asked my DD what their first class was this morning. DD said "French".

Anna Maria rolled her eyes and said "Oh no! French! I'm ON ENGLISH NOW!"

I guess switching gears isn't always easy when it comes to languages.

Definitely not easy to switch gears! I was an exchange student to France my senior year. When I got home, any time people startled me, I would reply in French. Like if they woke me up or something. It was a prank in my family for a while. On that note, the instinctive grasp I got on French would have been pretty much impossible to get in French class. I know which words/verb tenses to choose but not always WHY!
