I think it was a popular marketing strategy to invent recipes for various products. If the recipe became popular, it meant that product would sell better. I personally don't care for mayo or any of the variations available.

In a Dick van Dyke show episode Rob & Laura are eating at their kitchen table
having a discussion when Rob asks Laura where she got the recipe for what they were eating.
She says, "Off of the pepper box."
They both proceed to dash to the sink to drink lots of water.

My mother baked a chocolate mayonnaise cake but made the mistake of informing my father about it. He freaked out.

Mayonnaise is basically eggs and oil, standard ingredients in most moist cakes.

I’d bet the majority of people would react the way my father did.

(He eventually calmed down enough to try it. I think he secretly enjoyed it but wasn’t going to admit it.)
