last week one of my friends hit a moose not to far from my home.....this is all city .....the moose come out of the woods to get rid of the bugs that are harassing them......she is fine and the moose is fine too......last night a man hit a moose about ten miles from the city and the young man died.......we have alot of moose running lose......so hope you are all careful at night time driving....

I'm sorry Pumba but do you mean the moose died or the man died?

Those things are big! The only one I've ever seen was when I was visiting my son and his family in Sweden. It was across a field and still looked huge.

Pumba, I take it you don't live in the South...

yes the young man died.....George we all live here in Maine.....but still are city dwellers......one year a moose came out of the woods and decided to find a pool to go swimming in.....he jumped a few fences and was in someones inground pool.......made some good headlines

I guess you really need to be careful not to yell "everybody in the pool" too loud! How did they ever get the moose out of the pool?

Does RMD know about this?

Moosies are HUGE critters!
They're hit by cars here year round......and often the car suffers MAJOR damage (read: TOTAL destruction) and the moose walks away with a slight limp.

Once in a while though, person AND/OR moose don't walk away. Rather a bummer when that happens, eh? :(

Very sad.

Pumba there's moose running around the city. I'm interested in knowing how big this city is.

I'd run from those Maine Flies too.

Glad we don't have any moose in this area. The hoof marks on the car, when a deer decides to leap over it are enough excitement for me.

Hitting a deer can do some definite damage to a car; I can only imagine what hitting a moose could do!

Very sad about the young guy getting killed. . .:( Be careful yourself when you're out and about Marie. . .

My mother's co-worker hit a female moose on the weekend. It totalled her van. Unfortunately the moose died. I think she was driving home from Ottawa. The RCMP said that if it had been a male they probably all would have died (due to the size) The poor thing ran out of the blue into the road :(

i Work for a tractor trailer company. we had a moose hit one of our trucks on the maine turnpike at 1 am. It did close to $10,000 in damage to a tractor trailer. Hit a very critical area of the truck lots of safety devices. Remember to keep an eye out they do jump out and always do at the last moment. I live in the ct hills and its not uncommon to see deer just walking down the road, or a fox, a coyote or whatever other wild creature. actually we did have a black bear out on route 7 last year at 9 am (the main highway in this area at rush hour)

When DS was 4 (7yrs ago) there was a moose who came out from our backyard (yes we have neighbors right behind us), walked up our side yard and down our driveway! Im not kidding - this was in central MA

The same year we had a hot air balloon land in the circle in front of our house!

Deer collisions are a problem here and they can do some major damage. I can only imagine how much worse it is with a moose!

They do sell a device that you can mount on your car that is supposed to keep the deer away. I think it makes some kind of ultrasonic sound. I wonder if something like that works for moose??

Dh was a bit late coming home from work a few weeks back. He came home with a look of disbelief on his face. He said a big ol moose was standing in the middle of the road around the corner from us. I didn't believe him...we're fairly rural, but a moose??? Turns out he wasn't lying. I love where we are, but some of these animals scare the heck out of me when I'm driving...almost had a collision with some wild turkey last week. They just come walking of the the woods...no fear, but scare the heck out of me!

I recall about 10+ years ago the state of NY was talking of importing moose into the Adirondacks. In hearings it came out the state expected about 3 to 4 people a year would die from collsions and they thought that was acceptable. Turned out they did not import any moose, and they migrated there on their own over the years.

Thanks for the reminder, Pumba. We'll be driving up to Maine for vacation in a couple of weeks. We've gone there almost every summer since I was about 5 (29 now) and in all that time, I've never seen a moose. I wouldn't want to the first one I see to be standing in the road in front of my car!

Hi Pumba - I'm coming up to your lovely state next week for vacation. I can't wait!!!

I work for an insurance company and we've handled many moose hit claims. One of the worst one was a man on a motorcycle that ran right into a moose. Poor guy didn't survive. Talk about hitting a brick wall.

So do take it easy on the roads of Maine as well as Vermont. I've seen a moose twice in the past month!

Got to love the country!

I work in western ct for a large tractor trailer company, we handle at least 1 deer strike a week during the winter and spring, summer time we get 1 every other week. they are hard to see. I've been going to maine for 21 years now and never seen a moose near any road. but never let your guard down that is when they'll be one. I always keep a close eye on the maine turnpike from the main toll to exit 5 (where I normally get off) real wooded area and it is the natural area for moose. however now I guess that rule isn't safe if Pumba saw one near a city. where abouts was it what highway near a wooded area or what?

If you drive to the beach (Robert Moses) on Long Island there are like three signs warning you to be careful of the deer...the last one is a dead cartoon deer and a car with: "(fill in number here) deer died here last year". We always laugh, and I've vowed to take a picture of the sign before I leave for school, but it really isn't funny. Those things could do major damage. I always wonder how many people were injured in those accidents.
