Will be making our first visit to Disneyland in a couple weeks. I see on the map that there is a monorail. Can anyone just "go for a ride" if they want? If so, where would you board?

As long as you have a ticket to DLR you can ride. You can get on in DTD or in Tomorrowland. I don't think they let you go round trip. If you want to go back you have to get in line again.

It starts in Downtown Disney and ends up inside DL right above the Nemo submarines. Last time we were there, it was one way and then you get back in line to ride the rest of the way. It gives a view of CA, Downtown Disney, GCH, DLH. It is a nice way to get into (or out of the park) without all the walking. You must have a ticket to DL to ride it, as it stops in the park.

Unlike at WDW, the original monorail was just a ride. It did stop at the Disneyland Hotel many years ago, but it was not intended for transportation between resorts and parks like it is in WDW.

So to answer the OPs original question, yes, you can just ride it for the heck of it. You get a nice ride through the park, Downtown Disney and the Grand Californian.

Does the monorail run on MM, or do you have to use the main DL entrance until regular park hours?

It does run on MM, but it does not begin running until the park opens, MM or not. If you want to get in quickly, its best to be at the gate ahead of time.

If you get a chance, try and get into the front car. Definitely a better experience.
