We have a room booked at DLH this week 4-7. We specifically booked this hotel for the pool slides (my kids are autistic and are obsessed with these slides, so it was the whole reason we chose DLH).

I just found out via a photo on Twitter that the monorail slides are under refurbishment through the whole month of July. What? Why wasn't this even mentioned when I made the reservation? It is the middle of summer. Why would they schedule maintenance like this now? Were they just not going to tell us? I am glad I found out now so I can attempt some damage control. If we had shown up and found out on Thursday when we got to the pool, we would have had 2 serious meltdowns on our hands and it would have seriously ruined our stay (this is not hyperbole, my kids have been talking nonstop about the water slides for the last 3 weeks). I don't know what to do.

We check in in 3 days. What can I do? Who can I call? I don't even know what will make it better at this point, honestly. I feel so sad for my kids. It's too late to cancel and get my deposit back, and this little 3 night stay is really special because my husband is leaving the following week to work in Japan for a year (military) so this was supposed to be really special family time before he goes.
:guilty:

From what I've read, they've been down since sometime earlier this year (January is when pool area renovations began). There were both under tarps when I was there last month, but you might trying calling the hotel to see if they've got any new information. I don't know if that would help, they might be able to tell you if there are alternative pools with slides that you could visit during your stay.

During our stay in March, we were offered access to the hot tub, pool & water slide at Paradise Pier (no mention of GCH). But the last thing I wanted to do was schlep over to PP and back in my swimsuit! In your case, maybe it would be a good thing to do with your kids, but it was not something that interested me.

I am really sorry. It's odd how DLR doesn't announce hotel refurbs on the website like WDW does. You'd think they would be the same.

So take this with a MASSIVE grain of salt because Disney changes these estimates all the time but TAs are being told Yellow Monorail slide closure is through Jul 2 and Red is through Jul 16. And I am serious that schedule can absolutely change for the worse, Disney does that all the time.

You could call and ask them about the slides and try to get them to place you at GCH or PP instead if a waterslide in general is do or die to your trip. The worst that happens is they say no and you lose some time on the phone.

Personally I’d break it to the kids now to prevent Vacation Meltdown Mode.

Edit: you’re already on top of both of those, didn’t see your post. I’m very sad for your little one :(

This is not an acceptable solution, for any of us. If I had been told at reservation making time, I would have simply booked the GCH instead. Trying to move there now. Hoping they will honor the discount we had...

I am on the phone with reservations now and she just called to check the status and came back and said neither slide will be open during our trip.

I am glad I found out today, rather than when we checked in. Would have been terrible.

I am on the phone with reservations right now. Trying to move to the GCH. On hold. My son cried when I told him this morning. He tried so hard not to, but just couldn't stop the tears from rolling down his cheeks while he ate his breakfast. Crushed me.

Good luck! I know GC doesn't have the slides like DLH. I am just glad you found out now to prepare them. Still really stinks. Pools are a big deal to kids. Sometimes more than the parks!

We are locals and go to the parks every week. We also have 4 great pools in our neighborhood. The slides are the REASON we booked a Disneyland hotel staycation. They will do the slides over and over and over again. But they also like the GCH pool and slide, and my son immediately said "we need to stay at the Grand Californian instead."

I know it's not the same as staying on-site, but the Courtyard by Marriott does also have water slides at their pool area. They aren't Disney-themed and the hotel isn't cheap (it's probably about the same price at the on-site hotels), but that's another walking distance option.

OH NO! Well then that just really blows. :guilty:  I'm sorry.

I really hope they move you to the GCH without any upcharge. Last month they moved people from PPH to GCH (presumably to open up some lower-cost rooms at PPH for Star Wars reservations) so it seems it would be in the realm of possibility. I am really surprised the website still says slide closed through May 2019 and no one mentioned this when you made your reservation. Not cool! We are also local. When we stay at the DLR we stay at the DLH for the pools and slides specifically, so I totally understand where you are coming from!

I’m going to piggyback on this and say maybe even run the math on doing this and eating your Disney deposit if Disney won’t move you. If the other on-site things aren’t of interest to you this could be a better option.

They moved people from PPH to GCH for free?! I had no idea...

I am STILL on hold. Since I booked with the military discount, which has now been blocked out, they have to get the guest experience team involved to see what they can do. This is such B.S. They have ALL room categories bookable online at rack rate. The least they can do is extend the discount to me. I will pay the upcharge no problem. I'm not trying to get a lateral move for the same price.

We aren't interested in being offsite. I have the Great Wolf Lodge booked for later in the month for my older son's birthday. This is a specifically Disneyland resort staycation.

So now they are telling me that the yellow slide is open but the red one won't be open until mid July. Apparently, something went very wrong with the original refurbishment work on the slides. They were both open for a short period of time in late May, before being shut down because they weren't resurfaced correctly and people were getting hurt.
