I know this isn't a 'resort' question but it has A LOT to do with the 'monorail resorts'....people keep mentioning 'down time' and 'waiting a LONG time for the monorail'...what do they mean by 'down time'? Can someone explain?

It just means it isn't running. Either due to mechanical problems, because of construction at the GF or because of the shortened running day (they don't run during EMH anymore).

In July, 2012, the monorail was 'down' first thing in the morning, the morning we had MK reservations! We ran around trying to find someone that might know the situation or what we should do to not miss our reservation. No one seemed to know, including the front desk. Finally the mono attendee told us and we told the front desk. Communication??? Had to wait for buses they had sent out to cover the monorail.

Yep. One more reason why being on the monorail shouldn't be a determining factor in selecting a 'monorail' resort.

I just posted this on another thread. Monorail service seems to be spotty, lately. It's either down, or when it's running it stops between destinations to let "traffic" clear. A year ago I would have booked a resort solely based on monorail service, but it's just not reliable enough to use as a determining factor.

MONORAIL "DOWNTIME":

1) There are times the monorail is not operating due to failures.
. . . this happens 3-4 times per week
. . . usually an electrical or mechanical failure in one of the trains
. . . it stops the system/track of the down train (there are three tracks)
. . . typically the downtime is 2-3 hrs
. . . it requires a "tug" to come out and tow in the down train
. . . if the tug take too long, people are evacuated mid-track via high-lift
2) There are times the monorail is slow 2-4 times per day
. . . when very crowded people slow down the load/unload
. . . they try to get on even though CM's announce no more boarding
. . . this adds to the anticipated station-time of the train
. . . trains must stop between stations to allow trains to exit station
. . . this backs up other trains
. . . then the entire track is slowed
3) There are construction halts
. . . during the construction of GF-Villas, crane access was needed
. . . the cranes had to haul steel beams over the monorail track
. . . from 11:00am-5:00pm the resort-monorail was shut down
. . . this was selected weeks only from Feb-2012 through Jun-2012
. . . and for 3-5 days each time
4) Monorail operating time has been reduced to save money
. . . monorails no longer operate during some EMH hours
