Can anyone offer advice on the best way to handle the initial transfer of funds for a new purchase/member i.e. Bank v online broker - the banks offer a really poor deal but I want to use a reputable online outfit - we are worried about being ripped off......

If you are talking about a DVC purchase from Disney direct then get a credit card with n o transaction fees for foreign currency such as Nationwide, Post Office or Thomas Cook.
