I have been so blessed to have gone to Disney so much in the past 2 years. Each time I come home I show Mom my pictures and I can see it in her eye that she wishes I would invite her.

She asks me about my OKW DVC and she loves the pictures of her Grandson in the parks.

My Mom is hard headed! It is her way or no way! She is outgoing and outspoken. She is truly independent and has taught me how to stand on my own two feet.

How can I get Mom to come to Disney with me and let me get a scooter for her? What can I say to her? She walks with a noticeable limp and I know she is in pain. She fell down a flight of concrete stairs! OMG and wouldn't go to the hospital!!! Hard headed. She will not willing let me get her a scooter as of this moment.

I want to take her to Disney while we can still go. I want her to be with me and DS and share all the magic of Disney. I want her to be able to see all the parks and not have to walk on concrete.

Help me fellow Disers, what can I do and say to get this hard headed woman to get on a scooter and just have a good time???:confused3

Hi April

The first thing is to pick a point that is a little over 1/2 mile from where she lives and that she is familiar with. Ask her if she is willing to walk there and back! I was just reading in a fact sheet put out for CMs for Epcot's 25th that one around the World Showcase Promenade is 1.2 miles (and that is official and not a rumor). Explain that most people tend to average 8 miles of walking per day at WDW.

Then ask her these question, note the last one is most important.

Please ask the following questions. Here are the suggested answers to go with them.

1. Are you disabled (even temporarily)? Yes.

2. Do the people you are traveling with, such as your family, know you are disabled? Yes.

3. Do you expect to meet anyone you know during this trip who may not know you are disabled. Probably No!

4. Do you expect to meet a bunch of people who you will probably never meet again in your life? Probably yes!

5. Is there any reason at all that you should care what these people think about you? Absolutely No!!

6. Will using a wheelchair or ECV make for a better vacation for you and your family? Absolutely YES!

And make sure she is aware you have to handle DS and she will sort of be on her own.

Thank you so much, that is an excellent idea. I think I will have her come to the city to visit and we go to the mall and the zoo.

I will ask her in order and then pray she sees the points. I am aware that I must keep up with DS and take care of him myself. I have a year and am going to think about this carefully.

Thanks so much for good ideas on how to handle this.

April
