Modular Homes

Does anyone have one or is anyone planning on getting one? I am looking at moving within a year to 18 months and I was curious as to how these work and how long the process takes. Any informatin would be great!!!

I lived in a two story modular home in Maryland for 3 years. I was a little leary at first cause all I could think of was "trailor". But boy was I wrong. This home was better built than any "stick built" home I have owned. The walls were thicker, the insulation was better, the home was more sturdy and soundproof. The standards were much better than those put into my current "stick built" home. Those homes travel miles over bumpy roads and are put together on site. You know they have to be good if they can withstand that.
Before I bought that previously owned modular, we priced out brand new ones. If I remember correctly they only needed 2-3 months to ready the site and put them up.
So from someone who has lived in 3 brand new stick built homes, 3 previously owned homes and one modular, I would pick the modular. It was by far the best of the bunch.

I think whether you chose modular or stick built.... do your homework. Our builder was incredible and our stick built is tighter and the walls are thicker than any home I have seen before.

Our neighbor across the street laughed at us for choosing stick built, but then throughout the building process he was constantly coming over asking our builder to make repairs on his brand new modular.

It all depends on the company/builder.... spend some time finding one you can trust!

CJMickeyMouse, that's probably true. My modular was a Nanticoke home, built in Delaware. I can't speak for any other company.

BonnieA since you are from the area..maybe..I was looking into land at King George. Do you know anything about the schools there? My cousins live in Stafford, VA and the schools there seem pretty good...but a little further south..i dunno? Right now I am in Montgomery County and the schools here have a great rep..but the one school that I am zoned into is AWEFUL! All of my aunts and cousins when I told them the elementry school, middle and high school my kids were zoned..they go oh god..that is aweful!

I suppose if I get stuck here I could use someone's address in another school..or whatever..but that area seemd really nice. Let me know if you have any info on that area..Sorry if you are not around there..I get the Va is a big state so you might not know much about King George!

Sorry I can't help you. I live near Charlottesville so northern Virginia is like another country. And when I lived in Maryland I lived on the eastern shore and that WAS another country .

My parents have a modular and love it. They haven't had any problems with it other than something that went wrong with the linoleum in the kitchen after they moved in. I think it was nails popping up. They called the company and it was fixed (flooring replaced) right away.

I really believe that it depends on the company. Most of them around here are pretty good and we looked at modulars before we bought our house. Ours was built about 80-90 years ago, when construction was usually very good.

My bank is putting up a modular branch that will be ready for opening early next year. This will be our first modular one, so we're waiting to see if we love or hate it. It is VERY much LESS expensive than us putting up a stick built branch.
