Modifying to use banked points

Help from one of the gurus on here required!

I have booking for August 2024 using June 2024 UY points. I have recently purchased another contract, same UY but different home resort. The new contract has some 2023 points which I will not be able to use before expiry, so I will be banking them in to 2024.

I understand that you can modify a reservation online without actually changing anything in order to reallocate points and use the banked points first. However, does this work where the points are for a different home resort? I assume, if it can be done, it could only be done within the 7 month window…. But can it be done at all or does the fact that the reservation was made with home resort priority affect things?

To me, this sounds like something that can be done. I'm not 100% certain on doing it online yourself - but once you're within the 7 month window, at the very least it could be worth a call to MS. Online or MS, I believe you can do this. We've 'rearranged' some of our points in the past at 7 months (I've only experienced MS assistance), and would be a great way to save those banked points - especially if you do not have another trip planned prior to 6/1/24.....

If the August 2024 reservation was booked in the home resort window 7-11 months prior to checkin, you will not be able to apply points from a different resort. That would circumvent home resort priority! The best you could do would be to make a new reservation, using the banked points, within 7 months of checkin. Obviously, availability would play a large part in whether this would be possible.

But if you booked that reservation inside the 7 month window, you should be able to modify it, check the new contract and the old contract, and it would use the banked points first then fill in with current UY points.

One thing you can do at the 7 month mark is to try and get nights at the beginning or end of your trip at 7 months and then modify the original ones.

This way, you end up at least using some of the points and hopefully, can work it to get all. I do this all the time with my SSR points. I book nights at RIV or VGF using those points for what I can and then candle the matching nights I mad with my home resort points.

But, as mentioned, you can not reallocate non home resort points, banked or not, into a reservation that used the home resort booking period.

Thank you for your help on this! I will give that a go. It’s not a hard-to-get reservation, so hopefully I can just rebook with the banked points and cancel the existing res at the 7 month mark…

Takes a bit of getting used to all this!

Then I need to go back and completely reevaluate what it was we had done with our points (more than once), because I'm pretty sure we've done exactly what the OP is asking about, once within 7 months. Based on responses, I'm mistaken - but......

The system should not allow you to used banked points from a non home resort if rooms are gone.

The home resort contract will be checked and must be used first.

Now, it is very possible that if nights were still available at the 7 month mark and you choose both, then it Probcbly would pick up banked points from the other resort to cover nights still there….

So, I wonder if that is what may have happened if you think it allowed some level of swapping of points.

I have a related question to this so thought I'd ask it here instead of starting a new thread.

Scenario:
  • We have 7 nights booked in a certain room type during the 11 month booking period.
  • We want to change to a room that costs more points and also wanted to extend two nights
At the day after the 7 month mark if we were to modify the existing reservation to a different room type (assuming availability) would it allow us to use both home resort points plus non-home resort points. In other words:
  • Assume desired reservation date is June 1
  • On November 2 can I modify a reservation to a different (and more "expensive") room that starts on June 1 and use both home resort and non-home resort points to grab June 1-9
  • Then on November 3 modify to add June 10 (again using non-home resort points)?
If the above is true could we actually do this starting on November 1 since it's a different room type?

Thanks

Yes you would be able to do this if available as it would no longer be an 11 month booking but a 7 month one

Yes, you can do it. The home resort contract will remain locked but it will let you check the non home resort to use as well.

Honestly it’s a good habit to do if your nights are still available without home booking priority once within the 7 month window to go ahead and cancel and then rebook with the same nights. This allows you the flexibility if you so desire to use points from other home resorts if you decide like you know what, I want to have a longer stay at Grand Floridian during Christmas next year, I’ll move around some points right now so I spare some VGF points to be banked and use up my AUL so that way I can book everything at the 11 month window.

Home resorts made up just for example sake.
