Modifying an existing reservation & availability....how should I book?

Hypothetical question..... Let's say I book 10 nights in a studio for 154 points. Fast forward a few months and decide I need to free up a few points from that reservation. Can I modify this booking and "drop" a 2 nights even if these dates are all now unavailable? Or will it make it cancel the entire trip and rebook just the portion I need potentially losing the first 8 nights?

Would it be smarter to book 8 nights and then 1 night and 1 night in case I need to "drop nights" to free up points for another booking?

Thanks!

You can drop nights from the beginning and/or end of the reservation without risking the rest of the nights. You can’t drop nights in the middle and keep all of the nights on either side.

Sometimes I make two different reservations if I might want to split stay and switch some nights at the 7 month mark (and not risk losing the room I have).

Thanks! This helps. Our intention would be to drop nights from the end of the trip so I think I can book it all together then.

Just a reminder that if booking right at 11 or 7 months, you can only do 7 nights. You have to go in a few days later to modify and add the extra nights.

Once you have the 10 you are set and can later modify it down to however many nights you need. I always book 5 nights at 11 months for my 3 night trips so I have some wiggle room for airfare.

Yea this one will be booking in between 11 and 7 months (waiting on points to load) so I should be able to do 8, 1 and 1 right?

Yes...or, just do all 10 and then drop the days when you know, There is no need to do 8 and 1 and 1 unless you want to try and do those other nights as a stay elsewhere.

Changing the length of a trip by reducing days at the end is easy through the modification feature and there is no risk to it as you already have the room booked for your actual nights!

This is helpful information! We currently have an 8 night stay at AKV booked for December, though I was thinking about a split stay. I may try to switch the last three or four nights to a different resort at the 7 month mark. I guess the safest way would be to book the new reservation first (since I have extra points in my account), and then drop the nights from my AKV reservation.
