We have never done DDP and maybe going to do a split stay betweeen Polynesian and a moderate resort (PO). If we do Port Orleans we may want to add the DDP.

From what I think I understand is that we can’t use the DDP for Character Dining. Character Dining requires table service, but the DDP with Port Orleans only gets quick service.

This is confusing.

Friends of ours typically go to Disney, always do DDP and use them for character meals.

From what I think they go when it’s free dining but have also paid for DDP.

Can someone clarify this for me.

There are 3 meal plans

Qs
Ddp
Dxdp

Are you talking about the qs plan? You choose which plan to add unless you are doing a package that directs which plan

Side note, I would never trade down resorts. Stay moderate than upgrade to deluxe resort. Downgrading can be so sad

We would do first 1/2 moderate then second half deluxe

If you're talking about getting FREE dining at the mod, then yes, you would get the QSDP which does NOT include table service and you could not use those credits for character dining. However, you can pay to upgrade that FREE plan to the regular DDP which DOES include table service that would allow you to do character dining. The price to upgrade from the free QSDP to the regular DDP is $4.18 per child and $22.99 per adult per night of stay.

If you're not talking about the free dining promotion, then you can pay to have any of the dining plans you would like no matter which level of resort you choose..

If we did DDP while at Port Orleans any good credits we didn’t use do they carry over to the next day (or the days we are at the Poly)?

Or at the end of the day whatever wasn’t used disappears (doesn’t carry over)?

The DDP credits are all in your "bank" at check in. If you have any credits left they are good until midnight of your check out day, so in your case they are good on the day you check of PO and into the Poly but would expire that night.

We will arrive at noon. Will our credits be available prior to 3pm technical check-in time? Or do we have to wait until 3?

So I couldn’t carry the DDP credits over to our stay at the Poly then? HMmmmmm

up until 2017 Moderate hotels got the DDP; it was last year that MODs started getting the QSDP; maybe that is why your friends had the DDP in the past with Free Dining?

The dining plan (free or otherwise) is tied to your hotel stay - so you get credits to use based on the # of nights you are at the hotel that your dining plan is purchased with. And they expire at midnight of check out day from the hotel that the dining plan is attached to.

if you kept the QS dining plan associated with PO, you would get:
2 Quick service credits per person, per night
2 snack credits per person, per night.

Upgrading to the DDP would get you:
1 Table service credit per person per night (these can be used at the character meals)
1 Quick service credit per person per night
2 snack credits per person per night.

If you plan to eat twice a day, you can very easily use up all of your credits and just need to have a good handle on where your credits can be used.
Because they are good until midnight of checkout day, you could theoretically check out of PO, check in at Poly and use a TS credit for dinner at Kona Cafe. Even though you would have checked out of PO, your credits are good until midnight on your checkin day at Poly.
