I was online window shopping for wraps/slings and trying to figure out which one would be good for me. I was told that the Moby gets kind of hot with all of the fabric that will be wrapped around my body. Is the Maya the same way?

How do you keep cool while wearing baby at WDW?

I want to mainly use this for my baby when I need to NIP. Thanks.

I can't give you info on wraps..im a Mei Tei, Beco ,pouch girl..lol But there are a bunch of babywearer's on Dis so hopefully someone else can help. Have you checked out Thebabywearer.com (awesome site!!!!) ?
There are a few solarweave or solarveil fabric Mei Tei's by Sachi.com, or pouches in the same fabric (chicslings.com, hotslings.com)...those are very breathable and you can wear them right in the pool (or shower)
For regular non-hot weather babywearing..i LOVED my microfleece peanut shell pouch (goo-ga.com) for when the baby was newborn
And my Babyhawk Mei tei (babyhawk.com) for all the time ( i have 3 :) )!!
Also my Beco was really good....
Good luck!!!!

Is there anywhere that sells these slings to where you could try them out? I dont know which would be easier without trying them. Havent used one in years and I had a bit of a hard time with the one I had about 10 years ago. Thanks

I wish there was a place for me to try them on. Trying to decipher one of another online is not easy. :(

I actually like the Mei Tei first because I watched how to tie it on You Tube and it's easy to do. The bad thing about it is that on the site I was looking at it said that being able to BF in it wasn't just good and not great. What do you think?

Taking it into the pool would be so nice! I didn't even know it was possible. I did see a few slings and wraps that have UV protection and I thought that was cool too.

Oh and thanks for the links. I will be checking them out.

Actually you can nurse in a Mei Tei..you would just loosen the top straps a bit and nurse away..lol
Where in NJ are you?? There actually groups NINO (nine in nine out) that you can attend and try out all different kids of carriers...there is one in South Jersey and one in North Jersey....let me know if you are interested i can let you know how to get in touch with them(i am too far from any of them :()

Honestly, I don't think you could keep cool while wearing a baby. I bought a Maya Wrap to use with DD (now 2) and I think I used it maybe 5 times. My first mistake was buying a medium instead of a small and so the "tail" went almost to the floor. I watched the video that comes with over and over and just could not get the hang of adjusting it right, it would always be too loose on one side and too tight on another. However, while I didn't bf while wearing it (and I NIP tons of times), I do think it would be easy to do. In fact, they demonstrate it on the video. I think my other problem was that I knew no one who had a sling and never see people wearing them around here so I had no one to go to for help.

IF I had to do it over again, I would go with a hotsling, where you order your exact size and there is no ring.

Dont know if you are close to Red Bank at all, but this store just opened up there and they have a few different kinds of carriers there http://www.littlewillowbaby.com/
Modern Baby is Brick also carries Peanut Shell pouches and Hotslings i believe...

How old is your baby? if you have a younger (less than 4ish months) than a ring sling is great. Once they start to get heavier I much prefer the mei tai, esp for walking around the park. I nursed my ds in my mt a few times. It was not the easiest thing for me to do but it worked. Mostly, I just sat down and nursed.

More later, must run

My baby isn't born yet. I will mostly use it from birth to 7 or 8 months.

I have a Moby with the spf built in and love it. I haven't had any issues with heat yet, but not really sure how it would be in Disney. I plan on using mine at WDW in December, DS will be 10 mos by then. He loves it and I know it will come in handy. If you find a Moby dealer near you, they will let you try it out and will teach you how to use it. That is what I did. G/L and congrats!

I have (somewhere around here) a MamaBaby sling. It's a ring sling made out of a slightly stretchy fabric. The cool thing about it is, if you have two of them and put them on upside down on opposite shoulders:
a) you're completely covered, so wouldn't have to wear anything particularly concealing underneath
b) you can hold even the tiniest baby in whatever position you want, including over your shoulder, completely handsfree. Seriously, I have a front-loading washer and could empty it, carry the full basket into the backyard, and hang diapers without DD moving at all.

Instructions on how to do the two-sling carries come with them. http://www.thanksmama.com/Mama_Baby_Sling_p/mya-003.htm has pictures, too.

I just ordered a sling from sleepingbaby.net that is made from solarveil material. I hope i like it! Ahe offers many sizes and materials. I was due on Wed. and am still waiting for baby to arrive! I know I'll use it this summer alot when I take my older kids to the pool and I want to nurse w/o stares from all the kids at the pool....i'm hoping baby won't gain too much weight before out trip in Nov. so I can use it at disney.

I love my mei-tai! And so does DS, he naps in it every day! Actually, he's napping in it well. I actually find it really easy to breastfeed in, as i always wear a nursing tank under my shirt, so I can just pull up the top shirt and still have my belly and back covered. For me, breastfeeding in the Mei-tai is actually much easier than breastfeeding in a ring sling, but that's just my experience!

I can't help much with which type of sling to buy, but..

Just a suggstion about trying on wraps...I found that the local, stand alone shops often carried more of a selection and were happy to open boxes, help me try on carriers whereas the big chain stores made me feel like I was crazy to want to TRY something before buying it or OPEN one of THEIR boxes in the store (one of the reasons my husband will no longer buy baby stuff at the big chain toystore).

One day I realized the local children's furniture store also had a great baby supply section (breast pumps, carriers, stroller accessories, etc.). They cost a few dollars more but I try to buy anything I need there--I want them to stay in business forever! :)

I have an old baby nojo sling which I loved when my first daughter was born. This time we bought a baby bjorn baby b'air (meshy material-supposedly cooler) mainly because my husband won't wear a sling (they aren't "manly" enough for him), especially in public at Disney. I figure if he is willing to help carry the kid, I am willing to buy the bjorn instead of a sling.

I had a Maya wrap when DS was little and I loved it. It is relatively thin fabric. I did not wear mine in the summer heat in Florida so I can't comment on how that would work. But, I did wear it through a New England summer and it was fine. I think I used it until he was about 8 or 9 months. The last picture I have of me wearing it is apple picking (probably October) and he was a January baby.

Thanks for the advice. I'll try to find some specialty stores in my area (Northern NJ). Thank you.

I LOVE a ring sling for a newborn. I much prefer it over a pouch b/c of the adjustability factor. I have a maya wrap ring sling. I like it, but there are others I like better. You can find many other fabric options out there. I have a sling from www.prettymommaslings.com. It's really wonderful. It's solerveil which is a bit itchy but very very cool. I really have always wanted a zolowear ring sling but my ds is just too big for the investment now!!

Once my ds hit about 5 mos I started using the mei tai. It's an awesome carrier. After they get some weight on them, the 2 shoulder carry becomes super comfy. The mt is awesome b/c you can front carry and back carry. The back carry may sound crazy and hard to do but it really is easy once you get the hang of it. I've been doing it with my ds so long that when I lean forward and throw him up there he just leans into my back until I get situated. It's so comfy to back carry. I do love the front carry best in the mt, though.

At about 10 mos I started using a more structured carrier. I have a patapum and a beco (www.ecobabies.com). IMO these are not great carriers for tiny babies and while they are good front carriers, I much prefer the mt on the front. What they are the best at is the back carry. At almost 20 mos I carried my ds in my beco around Disney for 5 days. My back never hurt. It is just the most comfy back carrier ever!!!!

So, more info than you wanted, but I think it all depends on the age of your child and what you plan on using it for. If you want something to throw your baby in when you go to the grocery store than a ring sling will take you from the newborn period to toddlerhood. If you want something to take to Disney, I'd go with the ring sling for a newborn, a mei tai for an older infant and a Beco (or patapum or ergo) for an older/heavier baby.

Can't remember if anyone suggested it, but check out www.thebabywearer.com. Tons and tons of info, reviews, etc on baby carriers.

Thanks for this info. It's what I needed! :goodvibes I signed up at TBW today and so far I'm just reading and learning.

Did you breastfeed with any of your carriers? If so, was is complicated or easy enough?

I nursed in the maya wrap and it wasn't too tough. Off all the slings I think it's the easiest to nurse in with a small baby. You can tighten them to hold them in the right place. The one problem with a ring sling is that it does have a learning curve. I was able to figure it out and now am pretty good at it.

I also nursed in the mei tai while we were at Disney Land when ds was about 7 mos. It wasn't too difficult either but not as easy as the ring sling. You just have to figure out how to get them nursing while they are in the upright position, which my ds was not used to.

I much prefer to find a seat and nurse while sitting down but when we were out shopping or something and ds was very fussy and wanted to eat I put him in the maya and nursed him no problem.
