Sorry I know this has come up before. Do you think we should buy new cheap trac fones? (we will need 3). Or should we take our phones and buy new sim cards when we are there?. We don't want to use existing sim cards as we really don't want dh 's work ringing him all the time (which happens all the time here in the uk) Which way is most cost effective? We have used trac fones before from walmart and they didn't really work properly, but after reading other threads here on dis I think maybe ours were faulty.

Thanks for all your help,

Maria

After a lot of thought on this subject we have just purchased a tri-band mobile on eBay for £18. This is an extra one for our DDs when they go off in the parks on their own. The drawback is that the calls will be expensive, but at least we then have a phone we can use back home as well as in the USA.

Hi,

From what we understand, it is a simple matter to purchase a pay as you talk type sim card while you're there. That way, you and the other members of your party can call each other without having to pay the high cost of international calls.

As for communicating with the UK, just send a text to your loved ones here and that will give them your temporary number. Then, you can text them when you want them to call you. This will put the cost of the call on your phone here, which will be much cheaper than calling from a mobile in the states.

Hope that helps.
