Hi,

We're traveling the last week of Sept and were interested in attending MNSSHP. We are newbies so we have a few questions....
1) Would it be better to go on Sept 30 or Oct 2?
2) What happens if it rains ?
3) Is it scary for 2 & 4 years olds?
4) Is it worth it?

Thanks

1. I can't answer your first question for certain. We went Oct. 22nd last year, and it was a Friday and quite busy. But it was also during F&W, and closer to Halloween. My inclination would be toward Sunday in terms of crowd level, but the dates are very different from mine last year.

2. Not sure about #2, except as I understand it, most things continue on if it rains. Be sure to take ponchos (you can get cheap ones at Walmart). But I don't know if it's the same for MNSSHP.

3. Our dd was 3 last year, and there really wasn't anything scary about it. It was a little darker in the park than other evenings, but not by much. If they have any issues with darkness at night, that's the only thing I could really see as scary.

4. I definitely enjoyed it and would do it again if I went during that time of the year. It was one of our favorite activities of the trip. However, it might be tricky with a 2 and 4 year old. To get your money's worth, the later you can stay the better. In our case because crowds were fairly high, we didn't necessarily do more during that time frame. My dd was most interested in the actual trick or treating, which was fine. We enjoyed just wandering about and checking out the decorations, but I can imagine that for some, it would seem like a waste of money to do that. So, I guess it would really depend on your kids and what kinds of things you think they would enjoy about the experience.

Good luck with your decision!

1. Personally, I'd go for October 2, only for the reason that I think locals might be more likely to go on a Friday night vs. a Sunday, but maybe they could answer that better. We went on a Sunday last year the first week-end in October and it was wonderful.

2. I'm not sure about the rain. I would think it might go on, with the exception of the parade and Fireworks.

3. It's not really scary at all. It's the rides of course and decorations, they give you a bag when you go in and the kids (and adults) get candy at different places, there's the Halloween parade and I think this year there's Wishes. Mainly it's just because it's dark, if you're kids don't mind being out at night, they should be fine.

4. We like MNSSHP much better than MVMCP. I'm not sure why, but it seems more fun. I really don't know if you'll think it's worth it or not. We do, but right now our kids are grown and it's just DH and myself. With school age and above, definitely worth it. I think the 4 year old would enjoy it.

We did the first party last year and had a blast. The crowd levels were very, very low. It was also a Friday night. In the past we had done Halloween night (sold-out) and felt it was only 1/2 as crowded.

As for rain-- it will still go on. If it storms to the point the parade is unsafe to run they will cancel it. However, the party would not be cancelled.

In 2003 we took our 16 month old neice. She was frightened by anything there. It is very family friendly. This past year we did see a few more "horror" type costumes on the guests. However, it was nothing different then what might be seen on Halloween night trick-or-treating.

I think it's worth it. Last year we made a trip down for just the weekend. Our sole purpose of the trip was to go to MNSSHP. I've been looking at doing it again this year. Only I'm thinking of leaning towards MVMCP since I want to see the holiday decorations.

The first time we went we went the last Sunday before Halloween and it was awesome, not to crowded, walked onto things. For that reason we are planning on going Oct 2nd this year.

My DD was 2 last time and loved it, just didn't like Haunted Mansion too much, now she will be 4 and I can see her getting more spooked, just b/c we are in the "monster" phase.

Rain, I'm sure they will keep it on, like the others said may cancel fireworks and the parade.

Is it worth, yup, we can't wait to do it again!

Don't forget to check out the MNSSHP central thread stuck to the top of this board. It has tons of great MNSSHP info.
